Cape Town flood disaster leaves over 83,000 people affected

The City of Cape Town says humanitarian relief efforts remain underway across communities devastated by recent severe weather conditions, with more than 83,000 residents now affected.

According to Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell, completed assessments show that 83 184 people living in 21 546 dwellings have been impacted by flooding, storm damage and severe weather conditions across the metro.

Several humanitarian organisations have stepped in to assist affected residents with:

  • hot meals
  • blankets
  • emergency support
  • and essential supplies

NGOs currently assisting include:

  • Gift of the Givers
  • Islamic Relief
  • Mustadafin Foundation
  • and Ashraful Aid

Relief has already been distributed in:

  • Vygieskraal
  • Overcome Heights
  • Dubai informal settlement
  • Khayelitsha
  • Phillipi East
  • Ramaphosa informal settlement
  • Gugulethu
  • Valhalla Park
  • Lwandle
  • Mfuleni
  • and Kampies

The South African Social Security Agency and the Department of Social Development have also joined recovery efforts.

City calls for donations as recovery efforts continue

The City has opened several fire stations as public donation drop-off points.

Residents are encouraged to donate:

  • non-perishable food
  • blankets and bedding
  • nappies
  • baby formula
  • and personal hygiene items

  • Lakeside Fire Station
  • Milnerton Fire Station
  • Ottery Fire Station
  • Roeland Street Fire Station

Worst weather conditions easing but recovery continues

City officials say the worst weather conditions now appear to be over, but recovery operations are expected to continue for several more days.

Authorities are urging communities to support vulnerable residents and help connect affected families with relief services where possible.
