Cape Town storm response ramps up as flooding hits metro

City of Cape Town teams are responding to widespread weather-related incidents across the metro as heavy rain and strong winds continue battering the Western Cape.

According to the City, emergency and maintenance teams are currently:

  • clearing blocked stormwater drains
  • responding to fallen roofs
  • removing fallen trees
  • monitoring flood-prone areas
  • attending to electricity-related incidents

Officials warned that blocked drains continue increasing the risk of localised flooding during periods of heavy rain.

Residents are being urged to report emergencies and use caution while travelling as severe weather warnings remain active.

Driving licence testing centres affected

The storm has also disrupted operations at several Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) across Cape Town.

Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs confirmed that a combination of severe weather and network issues has impacted:

  • Goodwood
  • Somerset West
  • Atlantis
  • Durbanville
  • Brackenfell
  • Kuilsriver
  • Lingelethu West
  • Joe Gqabi
  • Milnerton
  • Hillstar

Residents are being asked to postpone visits to affected centres where possible.

Driving tests postponed at some centres

Driving tests have also been deferred at:

  • Elsies River
  • Fish Hoek

after strong winds and flooding affected testing tracks.

Earlier, tests at Gallows Hill were delayed after a tree reportedly fell inside the testing yard.

Candidates affected by cancellations or delays will reportedly be contacted directly by individual testing centres regarding rescheduling.

Flooded roads and dangerous conditions continue

Traffic officials have warned motorists to remain extremely cautious as localised flooding continues impacting roads across the city.

Drivers are being urged to:

  • reduce speed
  • keep headlights on
  • avoid flooded roads
  • increase following distances
  • use navigation apps to monitor delays and closures

Officials also warned about the risk of aquaplaning during heavy rain.
