The driver at the centre of the viral Kruger National Park drifting controversy has publicly apologised after outrage erupted online over dangerous driving allegedly filmed inside the protected conservation area.

Petrus Janse van Rensburg shared an apology on TikTok following backlash over footage that appeared to show reckless driving inside the park.

“I’ve loved the Kruger Park my whole life. I understand why this created a reaction and I take it seriously. I hear you. I apologise,” he said in the video statement.

“My goal has always been to help young South Africans build something for themselves, not to set the wrong example. I’ll do better.”

The controversy began after videos surfaced online allegedly showing Janse van Rensburg:

  • drifting on dirt roads
  • performing wheel spins
  • speeding through sections of the park
  • and driving through flooded areas

The footage quickly sparked outrage among conservationists, tourists and social media users, with many accusing the driver of disrespecting park regulations and endangering wildlife.

According to previous statements from SANParks, officials were working to identify the driver using vehicle registration details, gate records and footage circulating online.

SANParks also indicated that officials who may have failed to intervene appropriately could face internal disciplinary processes.

SANParks investigating incident

SANParks confirmed it was investigating the incident and warned that reckless driving inside national parks carries serious consequences.

Kruger National Park regulations prohibit:

  • reckless driving
  • speeding
  • dangerous stunts
  • and behaviour that places wildlife or visitors at risk

Penalties for violating park rules can include:

  • fines
  • removal from the park
  • and court appearances for serious offences

According to SANParks guidelines, speeding fines inside the park can range from R100 to R1,500 depending on the severity of the offence.

Public reaction remains divided

While some social media users accepted the apology, others argued that stronger consequences were needed due to the seriousness of the incident.

The controversy has reignited broader conversations around responsible tourism, influencer behaviour, conservation ethics and respect for protected natural spaces.
