What beneficiaries should know
The fourth payment day, Friday, 7 August, has been set aside for beneficiaries who have been flagged for social grant reviews or eLife Certification.
Once grant money is paid into an account, beneficiaries do not have to withdraw it immediately. The funds remain available and can be collected later from bank ATMs or participating retail pay points, including Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Checkers.
SRD R370 payments are processed in batches during the month. Beneficiaries should check their status online before travelling to collect funds.
Why some beneficiaries are flagged
SASSA social grant reviews and eLife Certification are mandatory checks under the Social Assistance Act.
They are used to confirm that public funds continue to go to qualifying beneficiaries and that payments are not made fraudulently.
While they are related to grant verification, they serve different purposes.
What is a SASSA grant review?
A SASSA grant review checks whether a beneficiary’s life or financial circumstances have changed since they first applied for a grant.
SASSA works with the South African Revenue Service and credit bureaus to cross-check financial records.
These reviews may look at changes in monthly income, marital status or newly acquired assets.
Beneficiaries may be targeted if their bank accounts show significant unexpected deposits or if their financial status appears to have improved.
If a beneficiary is flagged for review, their payment is moved to the fourth payment day of the month. They must visit a physical SASSA office, submit updated documents and declare their income.
What is eLife Certification?
eLife Certification is a proof-of-life check used to confirm that a beneficiary is alive.
It is designed to help prevent fraudulent payments being made to deceased individuals.
Unlike a grant review, this process is digital. Beneficiaries log into the SASSA Online Services Portal and provide a live facial selfie.
The system uses biometric facial recognition to match the beneficiary’s face with Department of Home Affairs records.
Anyone can complete eLife Certification annually to keep their details secure, but beneficiaries must complete it immediately if SASSA flags their account.
Grant review vs eLife Certification
A SASSA grant review checks whether you still qualify financially.
It must be completed at a physical SASSA office and involves documents, SARS checks and credit checks.
eLife Certification confirms that you are still alive.
It can be completed online using a smartphone or computer and relies on biometric facial recognition.
What happens if you ignore a SASSA review?
Beneficiaries who are flagged for a grant review or eLife Certification must respond.
If they fail to do so, SASSA can temporarily suspend grant payments. If the issue remains unresolved, the grant may eventually be cancelled.
Beneficiaries should also make sure their mobile number is updated with SASSA so they do not miss SMS notifications about reviews or verification checks.
