SABC1 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprisings with the premiere of Born After The Fire, a new 13-part documentary series exploring South Africa through the eyes of the generation born into democracy.
The series premieres on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, at 18:00.
Set against the historical significance of 16 June, Born After The Fire reflects on South Africa’s journey over the past five decades while examining the hopes, challenges and ambitions of young people shaping the country’s future.
A question for a new generation
Using 16 June as both a historical anchor and a lens for contemporary reflection, Born After The Fire asks an important question: What has become of the dreams of the young people who marched for freedom in 1976?
Across 13 episodes, the series explores whether the promises of democracy have been fulfilled and what challenges remain for a generation that inherited freedom but continues to face inequality, unemployment and social transformation.
Issues shaping South Africa today
Each episode focuses on a key issue influencing the country, including education, employment, entrepreneurship, leadership, social justice, technology, healthcare, arts and culture, identity and nation-building.
By connecting the legacy of the Soweto Uprisings to present-day realities, the series looks at how the struggles of the past continue to shape the future.
It also highlights the role young South Africans play in driving meaningful change.
Personal stories and national reflection
Through personal stories, candid interviews, historical archive material, expert analysis and journeys into communities across the country, Born After The Fire creates an intergenerational conversation about progress, purpose and possibility.
Viewers will hear from struggle veterans, educators, entrepreneurs, artists, policymakers, community leaders and ordinary South Africans whose experiences offer insight into the nation’s evolving identity.
Their voices are complemented by young South Africans who are challenging convention, building new solutions and redefining what freedom means in a democratic society.
More than a commemoration
Born After The Fire is more than a historical tribute.
It is a national conversation about where South Africa has come from and where it is going.
The series honours the courage and sacrifice of those who helped change the course of history, while encouraging a new generation to reflect on its responsibility in shaping the next 50 years.
Honest, inspiring and deeply relevant, Born After The Fire celebrates resilience, questions progress and invites viewers to engage with the continued pursuit of equality, opportunity and a shared national future.
