Legendary Welsh rock singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75 following unexpected complications from intestinal surgery in Portugal.
The singer, known for her powerful, gravelly voice and dramatic rock anthems, leaves behind a five-decade musical legacy that helped define the sound of 1980s power ballads.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler grew up in a musical council house before being discovered by a talent scout in a Swansea nightclub.
A voice that became unmistakable
Tyler’s distinctive husky voice became one of the most recognisable in rock and pop music.
Her famous vocal texture developed after surgery to remove vocal nodules in 1976. That sound would later become central to her identity as a performer.
Over the course of her career, Tyler earned three Grammy Award nominations and a Brit Award nomination for her rock vocal performances.
Songs that defined a career
Tyler’s signature hit, Total Eclipse of the Heart, was released in 1983.
Written by Jim Steinman, the theatrical power ballad became one of her defining songs and later surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.
Another major hit, Holding Out for a Hero, was recorded for the Footloose film soundtrack in 1984 and became one of her most recognisable high-energy rock tracks.
Her international breakthrough came earlier with It’s a Heartache in 1978, a country-pop crossover hit that helped launch her into global stardom.
Lost in France, released in 1976, gave Tyler her early breakthrough and earned her a UK Top 10 placing.
Eurovision and royal recognition
In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with the ballad Believe in Me.
She was later appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 for her services to music.
A five-decade legacy
Beyond her heavy European touring schedule and public career, Tyler was devoted to her husband of more than 50 years, property developer Robert Sullivan.
Her music, stage presence and unmistakable voice made her one of Wales’s most enduring rock exports.
For generations of fans, Bonnie Tyler will be remembered as the voice behind some of pop-rock’s most dramatic and powerful anthems.
