Jerome gifted new Volvo after winning hearts on viral Skate Across Africa journey

Jerome, the man who unexpectedly became one of the breakout stars of Jason Vanproppal’s Skate Across Africa adventure, has officially received a brand new Volvo after South Africans rallied behind him online.

The heartwarming moment followed content creator Jason Vanproppal’s ambitious 5,500km skateboarding journey from Uganda to Cape Town, which captured widespread attention across social media.

While many followed Jason’s demanding challenge across Africa, audiences quickly became equally invested in Jerome, whose kindness, humour and unwavering support throughout the trip turned him into a fan favourite.

How Jerome became the unexpected star of the journey

Jason originally planned to complete the expedition alongside two Ugandan skateboarders. However, visa complications prevented them from entering South Africa, forcing him to continue the final stretch of the journey alone.

That was when the Mabaso Foundation stepped in.

The organisation provided Jason with a support vehicle and Jerome as the driver for the South African leg of the adventure.

Over the following 16 days, Jerome became far more than simply a driver.

Social media users praised the way he consistently looked after Jason during the physically demanding journey, with many describing him as a father figure. His calm nature, generosity and genuine personality quickly resonated with viewers following the trip online.

By the time Jason finally completed his challenge at Cape Town’s City Bowl Skatepark, Jerome had built a loyal fan base of his own.

Viral campaign helps Jerome get a new vehicle

During the final days of the Cape Town journey, Jason revealed that Jerome did not own a personal vehicle despite supporting his family and daily responsibilities.

Wanting to help his newfound friend, Jason encouraged followers on social media to tag Volvo Cars South Africa in the hopes of helping Jerome secure a vehicle.

The online campaign quickly gained traction.

In a gesture widely praised across social media, Volvo South Africa responded by agreeing to provide Jerome with a brand new vehicle.

Jason later shared the emotional moment he broke the news to Jerome during a video call. Jerome appeared visibly shocked as cheers erupted from friends and colleagues around him.

What started as a support role during a skateboarding challenge ultimately became one of the most memorable and emotional moments of the entire Skate Across Africa journey.
