Iran’s World Cup Preparations Thrown Into Chaos by US Visa Restrictions

1.9k

The Iran national football team may have secured its place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the team’s preparations have been overshadowed by an ongoing diplomatic and visa dispute with the United States.

Despite ultimately receiving permission to compete, Iranian players face strict travel restrictions that have forced major changes to the team’s tournament plans.

The controversy has become one of the biggest off-field stories ahead of the tournament, raising questions about logistics, player welfare and competitive fairness.

Team Forced to Base Itself in Mexico

Following weeks of uncertainty surrounding visa approvals, Iran abandoned plans to establish a training base in the United States.

Instead, Team Melli has set up camp in Tijuana, where players will prepare for their Group G matches.

Iranian officials confirmed that under the conditions attached to the squad’s visas, players must enter and leave the United States on the same day as their matches.

The unusual arrangement means the team will travel across the border for each fixture before returning immediately to Mexico.

The setup presents significant logistical challenges, particularly during a tournament where recovery, preparation and routine are critical to performance.

Senior Officials Denied Entry

The situation became even more complicated after US authorities reportedly denied visas to approximately 15 members of Iran’s administrative and management team.

Those affected include Mehdi Taj and several senior federation officials.

The restrictions have created additional operational challenges as Iran prepares for one of the biggest tournaments in its football history.

Iran’s Group G Challenge

Iran will compete in Group G alongside:

  • Belgium national football team
  • Egypt national football team
  • New Zealand national football team

Seventh World Cup Appearance

While the visa row has dominated headlines, Iran arrives at the tournament as one of Asia’s most successful football nations.

Team Melli has now qualified for the FIFA World Cup seven times, having previously appeared in:

  • 1978
  • 1998
  • 2006
  • 2014
  • 2018
  • 2022
  • 2026

This will also be Iran’s fourth consecutive World Cup appearance.

Despite its consistent qualification record, Iran has never advanced beyond the group stage.

Chasing History

Iran has recorded three World Cup victories in its history:

  • A 2-1 victory over the United States men’s national soccer team in 1998
  • A 1-0 win against the Morocco national football team in 2018
  • A 2-0 victory over the Wales national football team in 2022

With a talented squad and growing international experience, Iran will hope to finally break through to the knockout rounds.

However, the team’s World Cup campaign is already facing challenges unlike those experienced by most other nations, with travel restrictions and diplomatic tensions threatening to complicate preparations before a ball has even been kicked.
