Severe flooding and storm damage across Cape Town have now affected more than 41,000 residents as emergency teams continue responding to widespread weather-related destruction across the metro.
According to Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, flooding has been reported in at least 26 informal settlements around the city.
Initial assessments show:
- 10,703 structures damaged
- approximately 41,635 people affected
Humanitarian relief organisations have already started distributing meals, blankets and emergency assistance to affected communities.

Roads flooded and major routes closed
Traffic Services Spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs, confirmed that several roads remain flooded following persistent downpours across the city.
The following roads are currently closed:
- Borcherd’s Quarry Road from the incoming N2
- Old Mamre Road
- Darling Road towards Atlantis between Philadelphia and Klein Dassenberg

Traffic officials warned motorists to expect:
- flooded roads
- lane closures
- fallen debris
- damaged traffic signals
- travel delays
Residents are being urged to:
- slow down
- switch headlights on
- increase following distance
- avoid unnecessary travel
Electricity outages and storm damage continue
City energy teams worked through the night responding to:
- downed power lines
- damaged electrical infrastructure
- widespread outages
Officials warned residents to treat all electrical wires and infrastructure as live and dangerous.
The City said restoration times may be delayed due to:
- extensive storm damage
- ongoing rain
- dangerous repair conditions
- high call volumes
There are currently more than 600 storm-related service requests logged with the City.

Informal settlements among hardest hit
The Roads and Infrastructure Management Department has already responded to incidents in:
- Phola Park
- Fisantekraal
- Bonteheuwel
- Parow
- Bellville
- Hout Bay
Disaster management teams continue assessing damage in affected informal settlements while reports continue coming in from across the metro.
Driving licence centres remain open despite storm disruption
Traffic Services confirmed that Driving Licence Testing Centres remain open today, although some facilities:
- sustained storm damage
- or continue experiencing intermittent network issues
Residents are encouraged to postpone non-essential visits until conditions improve.

Weather conditions expected to ease later today
Disaster Risk Management says weather conditions are expected to improve later on Tuesday, although authorities remain on high alert.
