BYD Scores Double Nomination

BYD Auto South Africa is proud to announce that its innovative Dolphin Surf and Shark 6 models have been nominated for the prestigious 2026 South African Car of the Year Awards.

The nominations arrive shortly after the highly successful launch of the Sealion 5, a model that has captured national attention with its blend of performance, safety and next-generation electric innovation. With demand surging and South Africans increasingly embracing new energy vehicles (NEVs), BYD has rapidly established itself as one of the country’s fastest-growing and most disruptive automotive brands.

Since entering the market in 2023, BYD has expanded from a newcomer to a major contender in record time. Its focus on affordable, sustainable NEVs has resonated strongly with local motorists, driving impressive sales and positioning the brand at the forefront of South Africa’s shift toward electric and hybrid mobility.

Why the BYD Shark 6 and Dolphin Surf Stand Out

The Shark 6, BYD’s super-hybrid pickup, redefines versatility for adventurers and professionals alike. Powered by a 1.5-litre turbo hybrid engine paired with the Blade Battery, it delivers a remarkable 321 kW and robust torque for towing and off-road use. As South Africa’s first plug-in hybrid bakkie in its class, it offers excellent fuel efficiency, low running costs and eco-friendly performance without sacrificing rugged capability. Sustainable materials, intelligent features and hyper-local navigation further cement its role as a modern, electrified take on traditional South African utility.

The Dolphin Surf, BYD’s compact electric hatchback, is a breakthrough for urban commuters thanks to its efficiency, safety and smart technology. Its 38.88 kWh Blade Battery delivers up to 295 km of range, with fast charging from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes. Key performance stats include 75 HP, 135 Nm of torque, 0–50 km/h in 4.9 seconds and a 130 km/h top speed. Built on the e-Platform 3.0, it features ESC, ABS, Auto Hold and a spacious cabin with up to 1,037 litres of boot space. Affordably priced, the Dolphin Surf makes EV ownership accessible, supported by features like voice search in multiple local languages.

These achievements build on the momentum of the Sealion 5, South Africa’s most affordable PHEV at R499,900, launched in early December with a five-year/100,000 km warranty and class-leading driver assistance systems.

“These nominations are a tremendous honour,” said Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa. “Coming off the incredible reception to the Sealion 5, we’re proud to be transforming the local automotive scene with vehicles that offer cutting-edge technology, affordability, and environmental benefits.”
