Volkswagen launches the new Caravelle eHybrid in South Africa

258

Volkswagen Group Africa has officially introduced the new Caravelle eHybrid to the South African market, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s electrification journey while retaining the practicality that has made the iconic people mover a favourite for generations.

For more than 70 years, the Volkswagen Bus has evolved from the original Kombi into the modern Transporter, Caravelle and Multivan, becoming synonymous with family road trips, business transport and everyday versatility.

The arrival of the Caravelle eHybrid represents the next chapter in that legacy, combining plug-in hybrid technology with the comfort, refinement and practicality expected from Volkswagen’s premium people carrier.

Up to 95km of electric driving

Designed to bridge the gap between traditional combustion engines and fully electric vehicles, the Caravelle eHybrid allows drivers to complete many daily commutes using electric power while offering the reassurance of a turbocharged petrol engine for longer journeys.

Volkswagen says the model delivers up to 95km of all-electric driving, with a combined driving range of approximately 700km, making it well suited to South African driving conditions.

Most powerful Caravelle yet

Power comes from a newly developed 1.5-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor integrated into a six-speed DSG transmission.

Together, the hybrid system produces a combined 180kW and 350Nm of torque, making it the most powerful production Caravelle ever sold locally.

Fast and convenient charging

Charging has been designed with convenience in mind. Owners can recharge the battery at home using the supplied 7.4kW AC Wallbox charger.

The Caravelle eHybrid also supports 11kW AC charging and 40kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in around 26 minutes under ideal conditions.

Premium comfort and technology

The Caravelle eHybrid comes equipped with a wide range of premium features, including:

  • Three-zone climate control
  • Harman Kardon sound system
  • IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlamps
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Power-operated sliding doors
  • Advanced driver assistance technologies
