Springbok Sevens delivered a statement performance in Perth, clinching a thrilling 21–19 victory over Fiji Sevens in the HSBC SVNS final at HBF Park on Sunday.

The win secured South Africa’s first title on Australian soil since 2017 and offered sweet revenge after recent defeats to Fiji in Singapore and during pool play earlier in the tournament.

A tense final decided by composure and power

South Africa went into halftime with a narrow 14–12 lead, but Fiji struck first after the break to move five points clear with four minutes remaining. Under pressure, the Blitzboks responded with calm authority, tightening their defence and raising their intensity when it mattered most.

Ryan Oosthuizen, later named Player of the Final, once again proved decisive. After scoring in the first half, he powered through four defenders late in the match to score a crucial try that swung momentum back in South Africa’s favour.

Ricardo Duarttee then slotted a difficult conversion from wide out to edge the Blitzboks ahead. From there, South Africa’s defence held firm, shutting down Fiji’s final attacking surges to seal the win.

Strong defence lays the foundation

Earlier in the final, South Africa’s defence set the tone. David Brits intercepted a Fiji pass, and Dillyn Leyds released Oosthuizen for the opening try. Sebastiaan Jobb followed with a second score after another forced turnover, as the Blitzboks surged into a 14–0 lead before Fiji rallied.

Commanding semi-final performance

The Blitzboks booked their place in the final with a confident 28–12 semi-final win over Australia. Shilton van Wyk opened the scoring, while Jobb crossed twice, including an 80-metre sprint after an Australian mistake.

Duarttee added a try and conversion late on, taking advantage after Australia were reduced to six players following a yellow card.

A title built on belief and discipline

The Perth triumph underlined South Africa’s depth, resilience and tactical discipline. With a blend of pace, physicality and defensive resolve, the Blitzboks delivered when the stakes were highest, lifting the HSBC SVNS trophy and sending a clear message to the rest of the circuit.
