A high-stakes street food challenge

This week’s episode centred on local and global street cuisine, introducing a new element to the competition.

Contestants competed for the MasterChef South Africa Street Food Classic trophy, a new travelling award set to feature in future seasons.

The first challenge required a refined take on the South African kota, a popular quarter loaf filled with a mix of meats, sauces and toppings.

Strong performances secure safety

Nkululeko stood out with a polished version of the kota, enhanced with homemade mayonnaise and a touch of jalapeño.

He secured the win and a place on the gantry.

He was joined by Dr Phil and Keith, who also impressed the judges with their interpretations.

Lesego’s breakfast-inspired kota showed potential but did not secure her safety.

A creative idea that missed the mark

In the elimination round, contestants had to present a bold street food dish inspired by local or international flavours.

Lesego chose to stay rooted in South African cuisine.

Her dish reimagined amagwinya as corn fritters, served with chakalaka, onion marmalade and a blue cheese and mint sauce.

While each element showed creativity, the judges felt the dish lacked balance and cohesion.

A tense elimination

Lesego landed in the bottom two alongside Jeshen.

Despite concerns around both dishes, it was Lesego who was ultimately sent home.

In a moment that reflected her character, she comforted Jeshen as she exited the competition.

A memorable journey

Lesego’s time on the show included a strong start, finishing in the top three in the opening episode.

She built a reputation as a precise and composed cook, often praised for her neatness in the kitchen by judge Justine Drake.

Her exit serves as a reminder of the competition’s core rule. Consistency is key, and every cook counts.

Other highlights from the episode

Candice delivered one of the standout dishes of the week, securing her second win with a strong take on Mexican fish tacos.

As the competition moves forward, the pressure continues to build, with contestants now competing for a place in the Top 10.

When to watch

e.tv airs MasterChef South Africa on Sundays at 18:00.
