Why Mahlatse Mongatane was eliminated
This week’s challenge tested contestants on rice, a staple ingredient that demanded both knowledge and precision.
Guest judge Zanele van Zyl led the challenge, pushing contestants out of their comfort zones.
Mahlatse struggled early on during a tasting round where contestants had to identify six types of rice. Missing out on a top score placed him in the elimination round.

What went wrong in the final dish
In the 60-minute cook, contestants were required to make rice the hero of the plate.
Mahlatse prepared coconut rice with fish, despite limited experience with the dish.
Several issues followed:
- The fish stuck to the pan
- He switched to beer-battered fish mid-cook
- His sauce split just before plating
- The rice was not the standout element
Judges noted that the dish did not meet the brief, with the fish overpowering the rice.
