The Wits Standard Bank Piano Festival 2026 returns to Johannesburg from 8 to 10 May, bringing together some of the finest pianists in South Africa and beyond.

Hosted at the Chris Seabrooke Music Hall, the three-day festival will feature eight artists across four concerts, blending jazz, classical and contemporary sounds in an intimate setting.

What to expect from the 2026 festival

This year’s programme focuses on the piano as both a storytelling instrument and a platform for innovation. Curated by composer and educator Carlo Mombelli, the line-up reflects a mix of local excellence and global influence.

The opening night on Friday introduces audiences to Thembi Dunjana and Thandi Ntuli, both known for their distinct approaches to jazz and composition.

Saturday’s programme is split into two performances. The afternoon session features Yonela Mnana and Bokani Dyer, while the evening brings together Hilton Schilder and Andile Yenana.

The festival closes on Sunday with Megan-Geoffrey Prins and international guest Taíssa Poliakova, offering a performance that bridges local and global traditions.

Why the venue makes this festival unique

The Chris Seabrooke Music Hall is designed for chamber music, which creates a more personal concert experience. The acoustics allow every detail to carry, placing the audience close to the performance.

Artists will perform on a Shigeru Kawai concert grand piano, known for its clarity and depth. This adds another layer to the experience, especially for listeners who appreciate technical precision and tonal richness.

A showcase of South African talent with global reach

The festival places strong emphasis on South African jazz and contemporary music, while also opening the door to international collaboration.

Artists like Bokani Dyer and Thembi Dunjana represent a new generation shaping the sound of local jazz. At the same time, the inclusion of Taíssa Poliakova adds a broader classical perspective, creating a dialogue between styles and traditions.

This mix positions the festival as more than a series of concerts. It becomes a platform for creative exchange.

Ticket details and booking information

The festival runs from 8 to 10 May 2026 at Wits University in Johannesburg. Tickets are priced at R300 per concert and are available through Webtickets.

Seating is limited due to the size of the venue, which means early booking is advised.

What this means for music lovers

Events like this highlight Johannesburg’s growing reputation as a destination for live music and cultural experiences. Smaller venues and curated line-ups are drawing audiences who want more than large-scale performances.

This festival offers a chance to experience high-level musicianship in a setting that feels close and immersive.

Why this matters

Live music events continue to play an important role in supporting local artists and keeping the creative industry active.

Festivals like this create space for collaboration, exposure and audience connection, which are all essential for long-term growth in South Africa’s music scene.
