Skincare Ingredients: The Secret to Understanding it

493

You may have tried product after product to find your match. Or you may still be searching. The real answer lies in understanding actives.

These ingredients improve your skin by targeting breakouts, dark marks, uneven texture, and early signs of ageing. When you understand what they do and when to use them, skincare becomes simpler and more effective.

Consumers want fast, visible results. They want products that address concerns directly. That shift has changed how people shop for beauty.

“We’ve seen a real shift in how consumers approach skincare. People want to know what’s in their products and why it’s there,” says Kamia Soobramoney, Customer Service Manager at Fundamentals Skincare.

“Our goal has always been to make activites approachable, not intimidating. When you understand ingredients, you make better choices for your skin, and that’s where real results begin.”

Here are the key skincare ingredients to know and how they work

Alpha Arbutin
A gentle, brightening ingredient. It slows excess melanin production and helps fade dark marks and uneven tone with minimal irritation.

Salicylic Acid (BHA)
An oil-soluble exfoliant. It moves deep into pores to break down oil and congestion. Best suited to oily and acne-prone skin.

Glycolic Acid (AHA)
A surface exfoliant that increases cell turnover. It improves texture, boosts glow and supports clearer-looking skin.

Retinol
A vitamin A derivative. It supports collagen production, softens fine lines, improves acne and encourages long-term renewal. Start slowly and use it at night.

Tranexamic Acid
Targets stubborn pigmentation, melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It works by interrupting pigment production at its source.

Niacinamide
A form of vitamin B3. It strengthens the skin barrier, balances oil, refines pores and improves overall resilience. Suitable for most skin types.

How to Use Actives Safely

• Introduce one new active at a time.
• Patch test before full application.
• Apply sunscreen daily when using exfoliating acids or retinol.
• Avoid layering strong actives unless guided by a professional.
• Adjust usage if you notice irritation.

Actives are not about using more products. They are about choosing the right ingredients for your skin at the right time, consistently. When you understand what you apply, your routine becomes intentional and effective.
