634

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall affecting parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday and Wednesday, 28 and 29 July 2026.

The warning has been issued as a severe cut-off low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding and widespread disruption across coastal and adjacent inland areas.

Areas expected to be most affected

The Orange Level 6 warning covers:

  • eThekwini Municipality (Durban)
  • Ilembe District
  • King Cetshwayo District
  • Ray Nkonyeni Municipality
  • Umdoni Municipality
  • Umzumbe Municipality
  • Parts of Mtubatuba
  • Parts of Hlabisa

What residents can expect

SAWS has warned that the prolonged heavy rainfall could result in:

  • Flooding of roads, low-lying bridges and informal and formal settlements.
  • Damage to roads, bridges and mud-based homes.
  • Dangerous driving conditions caused by standing water and reduced visibility.
  • Possible disruptions to electricity, water supply and communication services.

Disaster management teams have been placed on high alert as authorities prepare to respond to any emergencies.

Safety advice

The South African Weather Service urges residents to take the following precautions:

  • Postpone unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.
  • Never attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads or fast-flowing rivers and streams.
  • Move valuable belongings to higher areas inside your home where possible.
  • Stay informed by following updates from local radio, television and official SAWS communication channels.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, particularly in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

Residents living near rivers, streams or flood-prone areas should remain alert and be prepared to move to higher ground if conditions deteriorate.
