Mimi Coertse, one of South Africa’s most celebrated opera singers, has died at the age of 93.

Known as “Onse Mimi”, she passed away peacefully at her home in Pretoria on 27 April 2026. Her career spanned decades and positioned her as one of the country’s most recognised cultural figures on the global stage.

International career and defining roles

Coertse achieved major success in Europe, particularly at the Vienna State Opera, where she debuted in 1956 and remained a principal artist until 1978.

She became widely known for her portrayal of the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, performing the role more than 500 times internationally.

Her career included appearances at leading venues such as London’s Royal Opera House and major opera houses across Europe.

Recognition and honours

In 1966, Coertse was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government.

The distinction is regarded as one of the highest honours for an opera singer and reflects her standing within the international music community.

Contribution to South African music

After returning to South Africa in 1973, Coertse focused on developing local talent and promoting South African music.

Her work included:

  • supporting young musicians through a bursary programme
  • promoting Afrikaans art songs to wider audiences
  • co-founding the Black Tie Ensemble to create opportunities for emerging performers

Her efforts contributed to the growth and accessibility of classical music in South Africa.

Born Maria Sophia Coertse on 12 June 1932 in Durban, she built a career that connected South African audiences with the global opera stage.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren.
