Veteran broadcaster Michelle Constant has announced her departure from SAFM, bringing to a close a distinguished 30-year radio career across 5FM and SAFM. She confirmed in December that she would be stepping away from the public broadcaster to pursue new opportunities.
Her final SAFM broadcast aired in December 2025.
A Trusted Voice on South African Radio
Over three decades, Constant became a familiar and respected presence on South African airwaves. Most recently, listeners tuned in to her weekend breakfast show, The Jetset Breakfast.
The programme stood out for its thoughtful focus on South African creatives. Authors, visual artists, musicians, and theatre practitioners all found space on the show. It also explored science, curiosity, and the extraordinary details of everyday life.
The show’s identity lived in its tagline:
Small Stories, Big Ideas, Massive Inspiration. Shifting the Lens on Your World.
Recognition Beyond the Studio
Constant’s work has earned international recognition. The French government awarded her two honours:
Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite
Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres
These accolades reflect her contribution to culture, dialogue, and the arts beyond broadcasting.
Leadership in Business and Culture
Her influence extends well beyond radio. Constant spent ten years as Head of Business and Arts South Africa. After completing an MPhil in Corporate Strategy, she now serves as CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa.
She also holds several non-executive roles. These include board positions at Business Unity South Africa, the National Arts Festival, and the Indlulamithi Scenarios Trust. She chairs the Cultural Committee of the French Institute of South Africa.
A Legacy at 5FM and SAFM
Before SAFM, Constant presented on 5FM during the early years of democracy. She played a key role in shaping music programming at a time when South African radio was redefining itself.
Across both stations, her work reflected depth, curiosity, and a commitment to meaningful storytelling.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on her decision, Constant shared her gratitude and optimism.
“After 30 incredible years, I’ve decided it’s time to step into a new chapter. I’m deeply grateful to our listeners, who inspired us to tell diverse and meaningful stories. We are living in a rapidly shifting world, and while it remains vital to continue telling our stories, how we do so has changed. I am excited about what lies ahead.”
Her departure marks the end of an era for SAFM listeners, and the start of a new chapter for one of South Africa’s most respected broadcasters.
