Sunrisers Eastern Cape have confirmed their dominance in the Betway SA20, lifting a third championship trophy after a thrilling six-wicket win over Pretoria Capitals in the Season 4 Final at a packed Newlands.
A sold-out stadium set the stage for a high-intensity showdown, and the defending champions delivered under pressure. Captain Tristan Stubbs and Matthew Breetzke produced a match-winning, unbeaten 114-run partnership for the fifth wicket, steering Sunrisers home with four balls remaining.
A Final Defined by Big Moments
Pretoria Capitals looked well placed for much of the contest, thanks to a superb knock from Dewald Brevis. Walking in with his side in trouble at 8/2, Brevis launched a fearless counterattack.
He struck a magnificent 101 off 56 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes, one of the finest innings seen at Newlands. His effort lifted the Capitals to a competitive 158/7.
Stubbs and Breetzke Hold Their Nerve
The chase tilted back and forth until Stubbs took control late in the innings. Entering in the 16th over, he and Breetzke shifted momentum decisively.
Stubbs unleashed a brutal 21-run over off Gideon Peters in the 18th, then followed up with two towering sixes off Bryce Parsons to close out the match.
“Came in the 16th over and we ran with it. Funny things happen under pressure,” Stubbs said. “So stoked. Me and Matty out there, we were calm but probably panicking too. We know we bat so well together.”
Praise from the Sunrisers Camp
Sunrisers head coach Adrian Birrell praised the depth and resilience of his squad after another title run.
“I’m very proud. Four finals in a row is a fantastic achievement. Some players haven’t played, and we’ve got a very good bench. I’m very proud to get here today,” he said.
The victory underlined the franchise’s consistency and ability to perform on the biggest stage.
Capitals Left to Reflect
For Pretoria Capitals, the loss marked a second final defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Captain Keshav Maharaj did not hide his disappointment.
“It is disappointing to say the least. You feel the hurt of coming so close. The starts we get from both bat and ball is something we have to look at. Boys will hurt for a bit,” he said.
