MasterDrive champions dual approach to road safety with defensive and reactive training

663

In an era where road safety remains paramount, the focus on proactive measures, such as defensive driving, is essential. However, as highlighted by industry experts, a comprehensive approach that also prepares drivers for unexpected scenarios is equally critical.

Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, emphasises that while defensive driving strategies help avert potential accidents, they cannot cover every contingency faced on the road.

Defensive driving principles encourage drivers to anticipate hazards, maintain safe distances, and make informed decisions – skills that significantly mitigate accident risks. Herbert asserts, “These techniques focus on situational awareness, hazard perception, and risk management. Yet, even the most skilled defensive drivers can encounter situations beyond their control.”

Factors such as deteriorating weather conditions, sudden mechanical failures, or erratic behaviours from other drivers can still lead to emergencies. Therefore, training for reactive responses is essential.

This is where ‘reactive’ training becomes a critical component alongside defensive driving. According to Herbert, skidpan training serves as a practical solution to bridge this gap. He explains, “It provides a controlled environment where drivers can learn about vehicle dynamics during loss-of-control scenarios. By combining both defensive training and skidpan training, drivers gain the insight to not only avoid emergencies but also regain control when the unexpected occurs.”

Eugene ‘Gino’ Nourse, General Manager of Coastal Regions at MasterDrive, further underscores the importance of this training approach. The recently refurbished skidpan at Killarney is notable as the only professional-grade facility in the Western Cape. “This facility allows drivers to experience a variety of road conditions and scenarios,” he states. “A skidpan session equips drivers with a deeper understanding of why loss of control happens and teaches them the corrective measures to navigate through such situations safely.”

According to Nourse, this knowledge is valuable, especially when every split-second decision can differentiate between a minor incident and a tragic accident. He advocates for a strategy where defensive driving and skidpan training work hand in hand, stating, “While defensive driving helps to steer clear of dangerous situations, skidpan training ensures drivers can respond effectively when avoidance is impossible.”

The skidpan facility thus assumes an essential role in driver education across the Western Cape. Being the province’s sole professional-grade venue, it holds a unique position in shaping fully competent drivers. Through a controlled environment, it fosters driver confidence and competence in handling emergencies.
