The 13th kykNET Silwerskermfees is set to captivate film enthusiasts once again as it returns to the picturesque shores of Camps Bay from 20 to 23 August.

Under the expert guidance of Waldimar Pelser, Director of M-Net’s Premium Channels, this acclaimed festival continues to be a vital stage for filmmakers from all backgrounds, inspiring collaboration and creativity across generations.

Described by Pelser as a gathering of “thinkers, doers, creators and dreamers”, the Silwerskermfees highlights a rich tapestry of stories that reflect the depth of South Africa’s cultural heritage. “People want to be moved when they watch films,” he notes. “We all long, at times, for escape, reflection—or even catharsis.” Year after year, the festival surpasses expectations, cementing its reputation as a cornerstone of the local film industry.

This year’s dynamic programme features 21 short films, including compelling documentaries and indie gems, alongside six feature film debuts—five from first-time directors. The narratives explore weighty themes, from personal transformation to poignant historical moments, including stories about the Marikana massacre and the heartbreaking loss of a Springbok rugby player’s child.

Beyond showcasing acclaimed creators, the Silwerskermfees nurtures emerging talent through masterclasses and workshops. These sessions provide invaluable insights into documentary filmmaking, reality TV production, and shifting audience behaviours, led by respected industry professionals.

Among this year’s standout titles are Hen, My f*k, Marelize!, Khaki Fever, and Finding Optel, each promising a distinctive cinematic journey. The festival also renews its commitment to new voices with the Silwermark project, giving aspiring filmmakers a platform to pitch original concepts directly to kykNET and Showmax.

The festivities culminate with the glamorous Silwerskerm Awards on Saturday, 23 August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). This prestigious evening honours excellence across multiple categories, including technical achievements, with a pre-awards celebration at The Bay Hotel revealing winners in film categories.

For those unable to attend, the Silwerskerm Awards will air on kykNET (DStv Channel 144) on Sunday, 24 August at 19:00. Tickets go on sale via Quicket from 11 July, and anticipation is already building. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis praised the festival’s role in enriching the city’s artistic landscape and supporting the next generation of filmmakers.

Adding to the excitement, Pelser highlighted two eagerly awaited African premieres—Carissa and The Heart is a Muscle—that promise to resonate deeply with audiences. These films not only showcase exceptional artistry but also reflect timely, emotive themes that speak to the heart of South African society.

As the festival draws near, the kykNET Silwerskermfees promises a vibrant celebration of storytelling, reminding us of cinema’s unique power to connect, inspire, and transform long after the final scene fades.
