Classic Cars Shine at Creative Rides Auction

This past Saturday, the Creative Rides showroom in Bryanston revved to life as 40 rare and collectable vehicles went under the hammer.

With over 200 automotive enthusiasts in attendance and many more bidding online, the showroom transformed into a hub of excitement during one of South Africa’s most thrilling classic car auctions.

A Porsche Legacy Makes History

The highlight of the day was a rare 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster, which fetched an impressive R3.3 million, auctioned by the renowned Joff van Reenen. A one-year-only production model inspired by the iconic 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster, just 2,104 were ever produced.

The auctioned car was one of only 139 right-hand-drive, second-generation Speedsters, making it a prized G-Series collectible.

Interestingly, this Speedster model was never officially available in South Africa. When launched globally in 1989, it carried a 25% premium over the Porsche 911 Targa, which retailed locally at R341,000. Factoring in 100% import tariffs, the car would have cost around R450,000 at the time, a modest figure compared to its current value.

A Platform for Investment Classics and Future Icons

Kevin Derrick, CEO of Creative Rides, noted the unique blend of timeless and modern investment cars on offer:

“It’s not often you see a 36-year-old icon go head-to-head with what is essentially a brand-new machine. It highlights the investment potential of both classic and emerging collector cars.”

German engineering featured strongly in the top bids of the day, with a 2017 BMW M4 GTS F82 selling for R1.8 million and a 2021 BMW M2 CS reaching R1.7 million.

American Muscle Turns Heads

The auction wasn’t dominated by European marques alone. A 1969 Dodge Charger 440 RT, equipped with an 8.5-litre Chrysler Hemi V8 and extensively upgraded, achieved R2 million. This resto-mod masterpiece captivated the crowd with its raw power and sleek design.

South African Icons Hold Their Own

South African automotive heritage also had its moment. A pristine 1972 Ford Fairmont GT fetched R900,000, while a matching-numbers Ford Capri Perana V8 secured a solid R700,000.

A local legend, the Volkswagen Golf Mk I GT LTD, one of only 1,000 ever produced in South Africa, drew strong interest. Number 003, with just 29 km on the clock, reached R550,000 but fell short of its reserve.

The success of the Bryanston event underscores the growing interest in automotive investment across South Africa. Creative Rides continues to offer a curated selection of historic icons and modern classics with high potential value.
