Jimmy Nevis is drawing attention with the release of the music video for his latest single Prey, a project that moves beyond entertainment into social impact.
Created in collaboration with Women For Change, the release positions the track as both a musical offering and a response to South Africa’s ongoing gender-based violence crisis.

A song with purpose
At first listen, Prey delivers strong pop appeal. The melodies are haunting. The visuals are striking. The performance stays with you.
Beneath that surface sits a deeper message. The track has quickly gained traction as an anthem addressing gender-based violence, connecting with listeners on an emotional level.
Nevis first shared the song with Women For Change in 2025. Their response helped shape the final release, grounding the track in real stories and lived experiences.
Inspired by real stories
The artist has confirmed that the lyrics draw from the scale of gender-based violence in South Africa.
“The lyrics were inspired by the lives of all 30 000 women who have lost their lives to gender-based violence since 2016,” he says.
This context adds weight to the track. What could have remained a standard release instead carries a clear purpose.
A music video that confronts reality
The official video strengthens the message. Shot in Woodstock, it uses a raw, documentary-style approach.
Protest-inspired scenes unfold alongside the names of victims. The result feels direct and unfiltered.
At a private screening, audiences responded strongly. The emotional impact was immediate.
Nevis reflects on the experience of filming. “Nothing could prepare me for recreating the protest. It was impossible not to feel something in that space.”
Balancing music and activism
Despite the heavy subject matter, Prey remains accessible. The track holds its place within mainstream music while carrying a clear message.
This balance is deliberate. Listeners engage with the sound first. The message follows and stays with them.
Nevis describes the project as a turning point. “It feels like a rebirth. There’s joy and respect in creating something meaningful behind the scenes.”

A reminder of music’s role
In a space driven by trends, Prey stands apart. It shows that music still has the ability to challenge, provoke and start conversations.
It also reinforces the role artists play in shaping public dialogue.
