As femicide rates rise by 33.8%, the new single arrives ahead of a landmark live debut at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival on 28 March.
South African singer, songwriter and producer Jimmy Nevis will release his new single PREY on 26 March 2026. The track responds directly to the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in the country.
A release grounded in urgent reality
The single arrives at a critical time. In 2025, South Africa declared gender-based violence a national disaster. Between April 2023 and March 2024, 5,578 women were killed, reflecting a 33.8% increase in femicide from the previous year.
South Africa’s femicide rate stands at five times the global average, with a woman murdered every three hours. At the same time, an estimated 95% of rape cases remain unreported.
Against this backdrop, PREY moves beyond music. It speaks to a national crisis.

Music as a statement
Released three months after GBV was formally classified as a national disaster, the track places Nevis at the centre of a wider conversation around accountability and awareness.
His decision to debut PREY live with a full band at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival signals an ongoing commitment to the issue, not a once-off release.
“PREY is about recognising a reality that too many women face every day,” says Nevis. “As artists, we have a responsibility to reflect the times we live in. This song is my way of standing in solidarity and ensuring the conversation around gender-based violence does not fade.”
Inspired by national activism
The song draws inspiration from protests led by women’s rights organisation Women For Change, as well as the broader national dialogue around violence against women.
It reflects a growing movement calling for awareness, accountability and lasting change.
