Cape Town International Kite Festival Returns This October

262

The skies above Cape Town will once again come alive with spectacular displays of colour when the Cape Town International Kite Festival returns for its 32nd edition on 24 and 25 October 2026 at Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery.

For more than three decades, the festival has been about much more than flying kites. As Africa’s oldest kite festival, it has become one of South Africa’s leading platforms for raising mental health awareness while supporting the work of Cape Mental Health.

#ColourTheSky for mental health

This year’s theme, #ColourTheSky, celebrates the importance of kindness, compassion and human connection.

Just as every kite adds colour to the skyline, every act of understanding and support has the power to make a positive difference in someone’s mental wellbeing.

Since launching in 1994, the festival has encouraged open conversations around mental health, helping to reduce stigma and reminding people that seeking help is a sign of strength.

Fun for the whole family

Visitors can look forward to a full weekend of entertainment and activities, including:

  • Giant show kites flown by local and international kite enthusiasts.
  • Family-friendly interactive activities.
  • Live entertainment.
  • Food stalls.
  • Plenty of opportunities to fly your own kite and enjoy the outdoors.

The event promises something for all ages while supporting an important cause.

Supporting Cape Mental Health

Funds raised through ticket sales and donations help Cape Mental Health continue providing free mental health services to vulnerable communities across the Western Cape.

Cape Mental Health CEO Professor Ingrid Daniels said the organisation is looking forward to welcoming visitors back this spring.

“The kite festival provides us with an awesome opportunity to brighten the sky with messages of hope, stories of resilience and to celebrate the courage and bravery of those who live with a mental health condition. The kite festival gives us the opportunity to host our international, national and local kiters who will bring vibrant colour and flair to the sky. It’s a time when Cape Town comes alive after the cold winter months to support Cape Mental Health raise much needed funds and mental health awareness.”
