Blitzboks Close Gap in SVNS Title Race

2.3k

South Africa national rugby sevens team delivered a dominant performance to defeat Spain national rugby sevens team 38–12 in the final of the Vancouver Sevens at BC Place.

The win secured the Blitzboks their third HSBC SVNS Series tournament title of the 2026 season and tightened the race for the overall series championship.

Title race goes down to the wire

Following the victory, South Africa now sits level on 86 points with Fiji national rugby sevens team heading into the final tournament of the season in New York City.

Fiji currently holds the narrow advantage on points difference, leading with +201 compared to South Africa’s +199, setting up a dramatic finale in the season-ending event.

Blitzboks dominate the final

South Africa wasted no time taking control of the championship match. Ryan Oosthuizen opened the scoring with a powerful run after a quick-tap penalty taken deep inside South Africa’s half.

Sustained defensive pressure forced errors from Spain, allowing Sebastiaan Jobb and Shilton van Wyk to score before halftime, giving the Blitzboks a commanding 17–0 lead.

Tristan Leyds controlled the tempo of the match with sharp tactical kicking and creative playmaking, later earning Player of the Final honours.

Second-half momentum seals victory

South Africa continued their dominance after the restart. Van Wyk crossed the line again for his second try of the match, extending the lead.

Spain briefly responded through Jeremy Trevithick, but the Blitzboks quickly shut down any comeback hopes.

Gino Cupido finished off a flowing attacking move after a line break from Jobb, while captain Impi Visser sealed the victory with a 50-metre interception try.

All eyes on New York finale

With one tournament remaining in the HSBC SVNS season, the Vancouver triumph sets up a thrilling showdown between South Africa and Fiji for the series crown.

If the Blitzboks maintain their current form, the final tournament in New York promises to deliver a dramatic conclusion to the 2026 sevens campaign.
