LUMENOCITY Lights Up Cape Town

2.8k

From 9 to 12 April 2026, Cape Town’s historic Company’s Garden is transformed into a luminous open-air gallery as LUMENOCITY.

The Art of Light launches as Africa’s first large-scale festival dedicated to light-based art, immersive storytelling, and creative technology.

A new after-dark cultural experience

Set among centuries-old trees and framed by some of the city’s most iconic institutions, the four-night festival invites visitors to explore an after-dark landscape of light installations and interactive artworks.

All works are created by South African artists. As night falls, glowing pathways, projection-mapped façades, illuminated gardens, and sound-responsive installations reimagine the country’s oldest park as a dreamlike nocturnal space.

Perfect timing for travellers

Perfectly timed to coincide with the Two Oceans Marathon, LUMENOCITY adds a strong cultural layer to an already popular travel weekend.

International visitors gain a reason to experience Cape Town beyond beaches and mountains, while locals enjoy a fresh reason to return to the city centre after dark.

Festival highlights to watch

Key highlights include large-scale projection artworks across the Iziko South African Museum and the Iziko South African National Gallery.

Visitors can also step inside a striking 10-metre light structure housing a fully immersive LED chamber. The Beam of Hope, a vertical column of light, remains visible across the city skyline throughout the festival.

Family-friendly and fully immersive

Designed as a family-friendly evening experience, LUMENOCITY blends art, technology, and play. Food trucks, ambient performances, and interactive works encourage movement and exploration.

The atmosphere stays accessible and imaginative, inviting curiosity from all ages.

African storytelling at the centre

Rooted in African storytelling and local creative talent, the festival reflects Cape Town’s relationship with light, history, and place.

As light festivals gain global traction as cultural travel experiences, LUMENOCITY positions Cape Town firmly on the international calendar and gives travellers a reason to stay longer and explore the city after dark.
