Lip SPF is getting a glossy upgrade for summer

296

Glossy, tinted lips remain a summer beauty staple, but the latest approach to lip care combines colour and hydration with something often overlooked: SPF.

As beauty routines become increasingly multifunctional, products are being expected to do more than one job. Skin tints combine coverage with skincare, blushes add colour and hydration, and SPF is becoming part of everyday beauty routines rather than something reserved for beach days.

Now, the same approach is moving to the lips.

Lips are particularly vulnerable to sun exposure because they have thinner skin, less protective melanin and no oil glands to help maintain moisture.

UV exposure can contribute to dryness, premature ageing and pigmentation, making SPF an increasingly relevant addition to a summer lip routine.

Do your lips need SPF?

SPF can form an important part of summer lip care because the lips are exposed to UV while having less natural protection than other areas of the skin.

Despite this, traditional lip products have generally focused on colour, shine and hydration.

The shift towards multifunctional beauty is changing that, with consumers looking for products that combine these benefits with sun protection.

“Summer beauty is increasingly about making routines simpler without compromising on care,” says Shannon Dougall, CEO and founder of SKIN Functional. “The lip is often the last place people think about when it comes to SPF, but it is exposed every day.”

Lip care meets makeup

The move towards lip SPF is part of a broader trend towards treatment-led makeup, where the boundaries between skincare and colour cosmetics are becoming less defined.

Peptides, oils and antioxidants are finding their way into glosses, balms and lip tints, turning everyday makeup into an extension of skincare.

For summer, this can mean swapping a traditional gloss for a product that provides colour while supporting hydration and UV protection.

The emphasis is less on creating a complicated routine and more on incorporating small, consistent beauty habits into products already being used.

SKIN Functional launches Lip Protector SPF30

SKIN Functional’s new Lip Protector SPF30 collection combines sun protection, lip care and glossy colour in a single product.

The five-tint range offers SPF30 with a PA++++ UVA rating and contains Palmitoyl Tri-Peptide, vitamin E and coconut oil.

The formula has been designed as a lightweight, non-sticky gloss that can be worn on its own or layered over lipstick.

It is also fragrance-free, silicone-free and alcohol-free, and is made in South Africa.

Five shades for summer

The Lip Protector SPF30 collection is available in five shades, ranging from a clear gloss to deeper colour.

Translucent provides a clear glossy finish, while Blush and Rose offer softer pink tones.

Berry and Mocha provide deeper colour for a more defined lip.

Each 10ml tube is priced at R180.

How often should lip SPF be reapplied?

For ongoing sun protection, Lip Protector SPF30 should be reapplied after eating, drinking and spending extended periods outdoors.

This is particularly relevant when lip products form part of a summer beauty routine, as eating and drinking can remove product throughout the day.

The aim is to make sun protection part of an existing lip routine rather than adding another complicated step.

As makeup and skincare continue to overlap, the classic glossy lip is becoming more functional. For summer, that means colour, shine, hydration and SPF can increasingly sit in the same tube.
