Akani Simbine Named Sport Star of the Year at 2026 SA Sport Awards

South African sprint star Akani Simbine claimed the top honour at the 19th SA Sport Awards at Sun City on Sunday night.

The 100m specialist received the Sport Star of the Year award ahead of Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx and Proteas Test captain Temba Bavuma.

The ceremony recognised South Africa’s leading athletes, coaches, administrators and sporting federations for their achievements and contributions during the past year.

Simbine Claims the Top Individual Award

Simbine added another major accolade to his career following a strong period on the track.

He is one of South Africa’s most decorated sprinters and continues to compete regularly on the international stage.

His Sport Star of the Year award placed him ahead of leading figures from rugby and cricket.

Sekgodiso and Coetze Receive Top Honours

Prudence Sekgodiso was named Sportswoman of the Year.

Swimming star Pieter Coetze received the Sportsman of the Year award after continuing to build his reputation on the international circuit.

Coetze has emerged as one of South Africa’s leading swimming talents and a medal contender.

Proteas Named Team of the Year

The Proteas Test team claimed Team of the Year following their historic achievement in 2025.

South Africa secured its first ICC World Test Championship title during the year, marking a major milestone for the national cricket team.

The title capped a memorable period for the Test side.

Thabo Matebedi Wins Coach of the Year

Thabo Matebedi was named Coach of the Year.

The award recognised his contribution to athletics and his role in developing and improving the performance of athletes.

South African Sporting Talent Recognised

The 2026 SA Sport Awards celebrated achievements across athletics, swimming, rugby and cricket.
