As the world gets hotter, busier and more expensive, travel habits are evolving. Big, showy bucket-list trips are making way for slower, smarter and more sustainable adventures.

We spoke to Antoinette Turner, General Manager of Flight Centre South Africa, about the biggest travel trends gaining momentum in 2025.

Coolcations: Escaping the Heat with Off-Peak Travel

With Europe experiencing scorching summer heatwaves, such as Athens closing the Acropolis, travellers are opting for cooler climates and off-peak adventures.

“This trend is opening up new destinations like Iceland, Denmark and Estonia,” says Turner. “South Africans are increasingly travelling in May and September rather than during peak summer. It’s cheaper, quieter, and the weather is still ideal.”

Adventures After Dark: Rise of Noctourism

Why battle the heat when you can explore after sundown? Noctourism is all about evening adventures such as stargazing in the Karoo, moonlit hikes, Makgadikgadi Salt Pan sleepouts in Botswana and night safaris.

“South Africa’s new astro-tourism strategy is capitalising on our dark skies and world-class observatories,” says Turner. Turkey is also joining the trend, with attractions like the Hagia Sophia and Ephesus ruins staying open late into the evening.

Multi-Generational Holidays: Family Travel on the Rise

South Africans top the global charts for multi-gen travel, with 86% including multiple generations on their holidays, beating Americans, Brits, Aussies and Kiwis.

“Beyond the family bonding, it’s also a great way to maximise group discounts,” says Turner. Top picks include Dubai, Mauritius and Phuket.

Pet-Friendly Goes Luxe: Travel with Four-Legged Friends

Pet travel is booming. Hotels like The Oyster Box (Umhlanga) and Mount Nelson (Cape Town) offer luxury amenities for pets, from velvet beds to gourmet treats.

Travelling with pets? LIFT Airlines allows small dogs in the cabin (under 7kg), while FlySafair partners with BidAir PetLounge for comfortable pet travel in the cargo hold.
