As excitement builds for season 12 of Tropika Island of Treasure, viewers were given a closer look at a potential new location.
This week, past winner Hungani Ndlovu joined host Zanele Potelwa in Thailand to explore whether the destination has what it takes to host the next season.
First impressions of Thailand
For Hungani, the experience started the moment he arrived.
He described Thailand as vibrant and full of energy, with heat and humidity that immediately set the tone. The warmth of the people stood out, along with the country’s reputation as the “Land of Smiles”. He also highlighted the food and beaches as instant highlights.
Why Thailand could be the perfect island
Hungani believes Thailand offers everything needed for a strong season.
The mix of landscapes, from busy coastlines to remote islands, creates space for varied challenges. The climate adds another layer, pushing contestants physically and mentally.
He explained that the tropical setting allows for more creative tasks, which could elevate the competition and keep viewers engaged.

Why South Africans love Thailand
Thailand continues to attract South African travellers for several reasons.
Hungani pointed to cultural similarities, especially the warmth in how people interact. He also noted the variety of food and the value for money, with the Rand stretching further against the Thai Baht.
Getting around by tuk-tuks and mopeds adds to the experience, making the destination feel both accessible and adventurous.
A 24-hour Thailand itinerary
If you had one day to explore, Hungani’s plan is fast-paced and packed with highlights.
He suggests starting early with breakfast, followed by a trip to Phi Phi Island. From there, visit Maya Bay, enjoy lunch on the island, and spend the afternoon at Patong Beach.
The day ends with dinner and shopping at Chillva Market, followed by a night out at Fuga Beach Club.
Food that stands out
While Thailand is known for its cuisine, Hungani kept things simple.
He enjoyed meals across the islands, but one favourite stood out. Fresh mango shakes became a daily ritual and a highlight of the trip.
Reflecting on a life-changing win
Hungani won season 11 in Zanzibar alongside partner Dimakatso Calisa.
He described the experience as life-changing. Beyond the R1 million prize, the journey pushed him to grow mentally and physically. It also opened doors and reshaped how he approaches challenges.
Why you should enter the next season
Hungani encourages people to take the leap and enter.
He explained that the show tests resilience, strategy and mindset. Whether you win or not, the experience changes how you see yourself.
His advice is simple. Be yourself. Show your personality. Let your authenticity stand out.
