Trevor Gumbi Becomes First Celebrity Unmasked on The Masked Singer SA Season 3

714

Comedian, actor and television personality Trevor Gumbi has become the first celebrity to be unmasked on Season 3 of The Masked Singer South Africa after performing as the iconic Ponte Tower.

Now airing on its new home, SABC 2, the hit singing competition returned with a spectacular opening episode as 16 masked celebrities took to the stage in a bid to keep their identities hidden for as long as possible.

Trevor Gumbi’s disguise fools the panel

Disguised as one of Johannesburg’s most recognisable landmarks, Ponte Tower, Trevor delivered an energetic song-and-dance performance that left most of the celebrity detective panel guessing.

Detectives J’Something, Sithelo Shozi and Skhumba failed to identify the comedian behind the towering costume. Only Somizi Mhlongo managed to correctly guess Trevor’s identity before the mask was removed.

For his sing-off performance against Protea, Ponte Tower performed TKZee’s “Dlala Mapantsula”.

A tough first elimination

During the opening round, four masked celebrities competed, with the detectives and audience superfans helping decide who would remain in the competition.

Leopard first found themselves in the Danger Zone after facing Chopsticks, before Ponte Tower battled Protea for survival.

After the votes were counted, Ponte Tower joined Leopard in the Danger Zone before ultimately becoming the first contestant eliminated from the competition.

The final guesses

Before the reveal, the detectives made one last attempt to identify the celebrity behind Ponte Tower.

J’Something stayed with his original guess of podcast host MacG.

Sithelo Shozi continued to believe it was Trevor Noah.

Skhumba switched his guess to comedian and actor Tsitsi Chiumya.

Somizi, however, had a last-minute breakthrough, correctly identifying the masked celebrity as Trevor Gumbi.

Behind the mask

Following his unmasking, Trevor shared one of the realities of performing inside the elaborate costume.

“There is a ceiling fan inside the mask. But it was over my right eye – the one that can see!” he joked.
