Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) is celebrating its 96th birthday this October, signalling an early start to the Mother City’s festive tourism season. Since its inauguration on 4 October 1929, the Cableway has safely transported more than 32 million visitors to the summit of one of the New7Wonders of Nature — and is now preparing to welcome its 33 millionth visitor in the coming months.
A Season of Celebration
As Cape Town readies for another record-breaking summer, TMACC is marking the occasion with the Local is Lekker special, inviting South Africans to experience the magic of the mountain at a fraction of the price.
From 1–31 October 2025, South African citizens can enjoy discounted return tickets:
- R250 for adults
- R100 for children (ages 4–17)
“This milestone isn’t just about reflecting on our history; it’s about sharing the mountain with the people who call this country home,” says Wahida Parker, Managing Director of TMACC. “The Local is Lekker special is our way of encouraging locals to explore before the summer rush begins.”
Cape Town Tourism on the Rise
With tourism showing strong growth, the city continues to cement its global reputation:
- In 2024, Cape Town welcomed over 2.4 million overnight visitors, contributing R24.5 billion to the local economy.
- International arrivals grew by 6% year-on-year, while bed nights sold increased by 5%.
- Analysts predict South Africa’s overall visitor numbers could surpass pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2025.
TMACC’s milestone underscores the role of attractions like the Cableway in driving sustainable tourism and supporting the broader hospitality sector.
Sustainability and Community at the Core
For nearly a century, the Cableway has been a leader in tourism, conservation, and community upliftment.
- Community Upliftment: Through its Class in the Clouds initiative, TMACC provides educational experiences for local learners. Over 97% of retail items sold at the Cableway are locally sourced, supporting artisans and small businesses.
- Sustainability: TMACC partners with initiatives like the Kuyasa Housing Project, providing energy-efficient installations in over 2,100 homes. Future plans include offsetting carbon emissions through waste management at the Stellenbosch Recycling Plant and continuing the annual #TakeAHike mountain clean-up.
- Recognition: TMACC has been voted Best Tourist Attraction in the Kfm Best of the Cape Awards for the fourth year in a row and named Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the World Travel Awards.
Charity and Conservation
As part of its 96-year celebrations, TMACC will host its annual Charity Golf Day on 21 November 2025 at Atlantic Beach Golf Estate.
- Entry: R9 000 per fourball
- Sponsorships: R10 000 per waterhole
Funds raised will support Wilderness Search and Rescue and Volunteer Wildfire Services, two organisations dedicated to protecting Table Mountain and its surrounding ecosystems.
“The Charity Golf Day allows us to give back to the community and environment that have supported us for nearly a century,” says Parker. “Every swing helps preserve the mountain we love.”
