SA Hotels Prioritise Solo Travel for Women

637

Solo travel among women is on the rise worldwide, with 45% of women saying they plan to explore independently in 2025 – up from 37% just a year earlier.

South Africa is fast becoming a preferred destination for this growing demographic, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cities that offer empowering, authentic and immersive experiences.

Safety as the Foundation of Exploration

“Solo travel is about freedom and self-discovery,” says Elmarie Fritz, General Manager at Radisson Blu Hotel, Port Elizabeth. “Our role is to provide the security foundation that lets women focus on what they came here for – incredible experiences. When guests feel genuinely secure, they’re more likely to venture out, engage with local culture, and create the memories that define great solo travel.”

Hotels are embracing what they call “invisible security” – protective measures that blend seamlessly into the guest experience. These include:

  • Smart Infrastructure: Thoughtful design, strategic lighting and discreet security presence.
  • Trusted Networks: Partnerships with vetted transport providers and local guides.
  • Expert Curation: Concierge teams crafting safe, authentic experiences such as wine tours, cultural explorations and urban adventures.
  • Thoughtful Service: Staff trained to be attentive without intrusive oversight.

Beyond Safety: Enabling Connection

Leonie Andereya, General Manager at Radisson Collection Hotel Waterfront, Cape Town, highlights that today’s solo travellers are looking for more than security – they want cultural engagement.

“Women travelling independently are often our most adventurous guests,” she explains. “They want to connect with local culture, try new experiences and push their comfort zones. Our job is to facilitate that exploration responsibly.”

This vision translates into:

  • Cultural Immersion: Collaborations with local artisans, historians and storytellers.
  • Culinary Adventures: Cooking classes in Bo-Kaap, Cape Winelands tastings, and township food tours.
  • Nature Experiences: Guided hikes, safaris and coastal excursions with professional support.

Practical Wisdom for Solo Explorers

Hotels offering world-class solo travel experiences combine safety with insider knowledge:

  • Strategic Planning: Guidance on the best times to explore local attractions.
  • Local Insights: Honest advice on etiquette, tipping and navigating social settings.
  • Flexible Support: 24/7 concierge assistance to adapt to changing plans.
  • Community Building: Opportunities to connect with other travellers when desired.

Building Confidence Through Smart Hospitality

South Africa’s hospitality industry is evolving to meet the needs of independent travellers, particularly women. The focus is on creating confidence through preparation and discreet support that enhances rather than restricts independence.

“This approach is proving successful,” concludes Andereya. “Solo travellers are visiting South Africa in growing numbers, becoming ambassadors who return and encourage others to make the journey too. With hotels that truly understand their needs, the country has never been more accessible for women seeking meaningful and secure adventures.”
