Suzuki Across review: Suzuki’s boldest SUV yet

Suzuki Auto South Africa is aiming higher with the new Suzuki Across, positioning the SUV as a more refined, technology-packed halo model for the local market.

After spending time behind the wheel during its Cape Town launch, one thing became clear quickly: this is not simply another SUV entering the crowded C-segment space. The Across feels like Suzuki’s most ambitious local offering yet.

First impressions: Premium touches with road presence

The Across arrives with a bold design that immediately feels more upscale than many buyers might expect from Suzuki.

Its wide stance, sculpted body lines and LED lighting signature give it a modern road presence, whether parked along Sea Point or cruising Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Exterior highlights include:

  • LED projector headlamps
  • satin chrome grille detailing
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • black cladding
  • aluminium-look skid plates

The result is a design that balances urban sophistication with enough rugged SUV styling to appeal to active families and adventure-focused buyers.

A cabin built for families

Inside, the Across leans heavily into practicality and comfort.

The cabin layout feels clean, modern and intuitive, with physical controls placed exactly where you expect them to be. Suzuki has clearly focused on usability rather than overcomplicating the experience.

Space is generous throughout, particularly for families, with:

  • multiple cup holders
  • rear air vents
  • a large centre console
  • and a versatile 60/40 split rear bench

The technology offering is where the Across really starts standing out in its price category.

Even the standard model includes:

  • a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
  • a 10.1-inch infotainment system
  • wireless Apple CarPlay
  • and Android Auto

Move up to the GLX derivative and the specification becomes even more impressive with:

  • a panoramic sunroof
  • head-up display
  • 360-degree camera
  • and Harman Infinity sound system

Smooth and efficient, but lacking punch

Out on the road, the Across delivers a refined and easygoing driving experience, particularly in urban conditions.

Power comes from Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K15C mild-hybrid engine producing 76kW and 137Nm.

While the hybrid system operates smoothly and efficiently, the performance figures do reveal themselves when pushing harder or overtaking at speed.

The Across is not particularly quick.

That said, for daily commuting, school runs and relaxed family travel, the power delivery feels perfectly adequate and prioritises efficiency over excitement.

Fuel consumption is rated at an impressive 5.3l/100km, making the Across an attractive option for buyers wanting lower running costs without sacrificing SUV practicality.

Strong focus on safety

Suzuki has equipped the Across with an extensive suite of safety and driver assistance technology.

Features include:

  • six airbags
  • adaptive cruise control
  • lane keep assist
  • autonomous emergency braking
  • blind spot monitoring
  • electronic stability systems

These additions significantly improve long-distance comfort and everyday peace of mind for family buyers.

The Verdict: Suzuki’s strongest SUV offering yet?

The Across feels like an important evolution for Suzuki in South Africa.

It combines practicality, efficiency and modern technology into a package that feels notably more premium than many buyers may expect from the brand.

While a turbocharged engine option would add welcome performance, the Across succeeds in delivering what many South Africans in this segment genuinely want:

  • space
  • comfort
  • technology
  • efficiency
  • and value

After a day driving through Cape Town’s varied roads and coastal routes, the Across leaves a strong impression as a family-focused SUV that gives Suzuki a far stronger foothold in the competitive C-segment market.
