FIFA World Cup 2026 Opening Ceremony: Times, Performers and How South Africans Can Watch

30.5k

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to make history before a ball is even kicked, with FIFA confirming an unprecedented trio of opening ceremonies across its three host nations: Mexico, Canada and the United States.

Rather than a single curtain-raiser, each host country will stage its own dedicated opening celebration ahead of its first group-stage match, creating a festival of football, music and culture across North America. The ceremonies are being produced by renowned Italian creative director Marco Balich, whose company previously helped deliver the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

For South African football fans, the first ceremony carries extra significance, as it will take place immediately before Bafana Bafana’s opening match against Mexico in Mexico City.

Three Host Nations, Three Opening Spectacles

Each ceremony will begin approximately 90 minutes before kick-off and feature a blend of live music performances, cultural showcases, parade of flags and official FIFA protocol. FIFA says the events will celebrate the unique identity of each host nation while promoting unity across the continent.

Mexico Opening Ceremony

Date: Thursday, 11 June 2026
Venue: Estadio Azteca
Match: Mexico vs South Africa

Mexico will host the tournament’s first ceremony, headlined by global superstar Shakira and Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy, who will perform the official FIFA World Cup song, Dai Dai, live for the first time. The line-up also includes Tyla, J Balvin, Maná, Alejandro Fernández and Los Ángeles Azules.

The ceremony’s artistic theme is inspired by papel picado, Mexico’s traditional decorative paper-cutting art.

Canada Opening Ceremony

Date: Friday, 12 June 2026
Venue: BMO Field
Match: Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina

Canada’s celebration will focus on multiculturalism and diversity, reflecting the country’s global identity. The event will be led by Canadian music icons Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette, alongside performers including Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez and Elyanna.

United States Opening Ceremony

Date: Friday, 12 June 2026
Venue: SoFi Stadium
Match: United States vs Paraguay

Los Angeles will host the United States ceremony, featuring a futuristic interpretation of the World Cup trophy. The line-up includes pop superstar Katy Perry, rapper Future, Lisa, Brazilian artist Anitta, Nigerian star Rema and a second appearance by South Africa’s Tyla.

South Africa’s Opening Match Takes Centre Stage

The tournament officially begins when South Africa faces Mexico in Mexico City on 11 June, placing Bafana Bafana in front of a global audience estimated to reach billions of viewers. The match follows directly after the opening ceremony and marks South Africa’s return to football’s biggest stage.

With Tyla included in both the Mexico and United States ceremonies, South Africa will have representation both on the pitch and on the entertainment stage.

World Cup Final to Feature Historic Halftime Show

FIFA has also confirmed that the 2026 World Cup Final on 19 July will include the tournament’s first-ever Super Bowl-style halftime show. The event will be curated by Chris Martin and is expected to feature performances from Madonna, Shakira and BTS at MetLife Stadium.

How South Africans Can Watch

South African football fans will have multiple ways to watch the opening ceremonies and Bafana Bafana’s first FIFA World Cup 2026 match live.
