Ramaphosa to launch South Africa’s Electronic Travel Authorisation system

President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially launch South Africa’s Electronic Travel Authorisation system at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.

The launch follows a pilot of the digital system during South Africa’s G20 Presidency.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber will join Ramaphosa at the event.

ETA forms part of digital immigration reforms

The Presidency described the Electronic Travel Authorisation, known as the ETA, as a central part of South Africa’s new digital immigration system.

It will also serve as the flagship reform under the Department of Home Affairs’ digital transformation programme.

“The ETA combines advanced biometric verification, machine learning and the upgraded Electronic Movement Control System (eMCS 2.0) as part of a modern digital immigration ecosystem that strengthens border security while making travel to South Africa faster, simpler and more secure for legitimate travellers,” the Presidency said in a statement.

Government targets faster and more secure travel

The digital platform is intended to improve the efficiency and security of South Africa’s border management system.

Government also expects it to support the country’s position as a destination for tourism, business and investment.

“This reform will enhance South Africa’s competitiveness as a destination for tourism, business and investment, while supporting more efficient and secure border management,” the statement read.

Home Affairs and BMA advance digital transformation

The launch forms part of the digital transformation of the Department of Home Affairs and the Border Management Authority.

“The launch marks a significant milestone in the digital transformation of the Department of Home Affairs and the Border Management Authority (BMA), demonstrating government’s commitment to harnessing technology to improve service delivery, safeguard national security and facilitate economic growth,” the Presidency said.

Live demonstration planned at OR Tambo

The launch programme will include a live demonstration of the ETA system.

Border Management Authority Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato will also lead a guided tour during the event.
