South Africa’s women’s hockey team delivered a composed, confident performance to secure a 2–0 victory over Canada in the third Test of their five-match series at HS Menlopark in Pretoria.
Controlled performance on home turf
South Africa’s women’s hockey team controlled large spells of the match, dictating tempo and territory. The hosts earned more than 10 penalty corners and applied sustained pressure inside the Canadian half. Despite this dominance, they were repeatedly denied by an outstanding display from the Canadian goalkeeper.
Debut between the posts
The match marked a senior international debut for goalkeeper Jana-Marie Botha, who showed composure and calm decision-making. South Africa’s defensive structure limited Canada’s attacking opportunities and ensured a clean sheet.
Mokoena breaks the deadlock
The breakthrough came through individual brilliance from Ntsopa Mokoena. Slipped into the circle, she recovered after an initial loss of control, shifted the ball onto her reverse stick and fired home with confidence.
High press seals the win
South Africa’s second goal came from intensity and teamwork. A high press forced a turnover deep in Canadian territory. Thati Zulu and Mokoena combined before slipping the ball past the advancing keeper, allowing Laiken Brisset to finish.
Building momentum toward the World Cup
While the hosts created chances to extend the scoreline, the result offered strong encouragement. The performance showed growth, balance, and discipline at both ends of the field.
Reflecting on the match, Thati Zulu said the focus remains on long-term progress.
“I think it was a good game, especially after a frustrating performance yesterday. This is about building up for a World Cup, so it’s important that we keep seeing progress this year. The support really helped us today and fuels the fire.”
