Franschhoek remains one of South Africa’s leading food destinations, where award-winning restaurants and innovative chefs continue to push culinary boundaries. Among these standout dining experiences sits Ōku, a contemporary Japanese restaurant known for its refined flavours, local ingredients and carefully curated tasting menus.
A visit to Ōku feels less like a traditional dinner and more like a carefully staged culinary performance, where each course arrives with its own thoughtful pairing and visual flair.
A Japanese tasting journey in the Winelands
Located in the heart of Franschhoek, Ōku presents a dining philosophy rooted in Japanese technique while celebrating the quality of South African produce.
My recent visit centred around the restaurant’s signature 10-course Kaiseki menu, an experience inspired by traditional Japanese multi-course dining.
The evening began with three complimentary starters. Each dish delivered bold flavours and careful presentation, setting the tone before the formal courses even arrived.

Steam bread, nigiri and delicate seafood
The first course introduced fluffy steamed bread topped with fig chutney and kewpie mayonnaise. Soft and pillowy, the dish balanced sweetness and richness in a single bite.
Next came prawn nigiri, bright and fresh with a squeeze of lime that lifted the delicate seafood flavour.
A highlight of the early courses featured Three Streams trout, paired with watermelon, ginger and miso. The combination created a light yet complex dish that delivered clean, balanced flavours.
Rich, bold and deeply satisfying dishes
As the tasting menu progressed, the kitchen moved into richer flavour territory.
Beef tartare arrived with tahini, kimchi and egg yolk, producing a bold combination of savoury depth and spice. The smoked miso aubergine followed with silky texture and a deep umami profile.
Then came a standout course: Mozambican lobster with bright citrus notes. The dish showcased the kitchen’s ability to pair Japanese technique with premium local seafood.
The wagyu dumplings, served in a comforting Mongolian broth, offered warmth and richness. Each dumpling delivered soft texture and deep savoury flavour.
A tender main and elegant dessert
The final savoury dish presented braised lamb neck so tender it yielded effortlessly under the fork. The slow-cooked meat added a hearty finish to the savoury portion of the menu.
Dessert closed the experience with Japanese cheesecake served alongside plum ice cream. Light, creamy and balanced, the dish delivered a gentle and refreshing finale.

Japanese technique meets local ingredients
Since opening in 2020 alongside sister restaurant Yama Sushi Emporium, Ōku has built a reputation as a contemporary Japanese-inspired dining destination.
The philosophy remains simple. Japanese techniques guide the cooking, while the ingredients come directly from South African farms and producers.
Wine and sake pairings accompany each course, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available. This thoughtful approach ensures every guest enjoys a tailored tasting journey.
Dining at Ōku delivers more than a meal. It offers a carefully crafted experience built around flavour, texture and creative presentation in the heart of the Cape Winelands.
