Nissan Spirit of Africa Trophy celebrates 21 years of off-road thrills

The highly anticipated Nissan Spirit of Africa Trophy, praised as Africa’s toughest 4×4 driving competition, is poised to ignite excitement for its 21st anniversary. Beginning with elimination rounds on 22 April, the 2025 edition has captured the ardour of off-road enthusiasts eager to conquer the demanding course at the Sandwani Game Lodge in Gauteng.

With a target set on securing a coveted spot among the Top 20 teams, the stakes have never been higher, as results from the elimination rounds will be announced on 21 June.

Competitors this year are not just any drivers; they are navigating the trials in the newly launched Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior by Premcar. This high-performance variant of the Navara, proudly South African and Australian-engineered, was introduced to the market in March and is set to showcase unparalleled abilities under harsh driving conditions.

The Nissan Spirit of Africa Trophy originated from the vision of rally legend Sarel van der Merwe and has evolved into a highly competitive platform for off-road enthusiasts looking to test their skills against fellow adventurers through a series of rigorous trials. The elimination phase features diverse challenges, including precision driving over tricky terrains and high-speed tests that assess both driver prowess and vehicle performance.

Maciej Klenkiewicz, Country Managing Director for Nissan South Africa and Independent Markets Africa, highlighted the competition’s growing allure, stating, “The surge in enthusiasm — increasing from 300 to 400 fully booked teams in just a year — is remarkable. We’re particularly excited about this year’s series with the introduction of the Warrior as the new official competition vehicle, specifically engineered for intense driving situations.”

The Navara PRO-4X Warrior embodies a flagship model of the Navara range, enhanced for extreme performance. The collaboration between Nissan and Australian firm Premcar has led South Africa to become the first market outside Australia where the Warrior is available. Manufactured at Nissan’s Rosslyn plant near Pretoria, it boasts a powerful 2.5-litre DDTi turbo-diesel engine with metrics that impress: 140 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque.

The Warrior integrates modifications for rugged capability – reinforced suspension, increased ride height, enhanced ground clearance, and state-of-the-art all-terrain tyres – making it adept at traversing the continent’s more formidable landscapes. As participants navigate the Spirit of Africa’s challenging course, which spans high-speed rally sections to tricky manoeuvres, the Warrior’s strength, durability, and intelligent 4×4 technology will prove essential in clinching victory.

Klenkiewicz expressed the competition’s significance to Nissan: “The Spirit of Africa reflects our heritage and commitment in South Africa. For decades, we’ve crafted vehicles locally to meet the demands of our unique and rugged terrain. Witnessing the Warrior, assembled at our Rosslyn plant, tackle Africa’s toughest conditions not only fills us with pride but also demonstrates our dedication to capability, endurance, and our deep connections to the people and places that drive us forward.”

As the elimination rounds progress, competitors brace themselves for the numerous obstacles lying in wait, which are set to test their resolve and the formidable capabilities of the Navara PRO-4X Warrior. By the end of June, the top 20 teams will have established their prowess, paving the way for the grand finale later this year, where the ultimate champion of the 2025 Spirit of Africa Trophy will be crowned.
