Volvo Cars has made waves in the automotive industry with the launch of its new XC70, a mid-size SUV that marks a leap into the world of extended-range plug-in hybrids. With an impressive electric range of up to 200 kilometres, the XC70 stands as the longest-range plug-in hybrid from the Swedish automaker.
Built on the innovative SMA platform — a premium architecture tailored for extended-range capabilities — the XC70 caters to a growing demand in markets like China, where it will be available for order this year. Plans are in motion to explore additional international markets later on, indicating Volvo’s commitment to broadening its global footprint.
“The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification,” says Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars.
He highlights that this new model allows them to nurture a balanced product portfolio while providing a compelling alternative for consumers still on the fence about fully electric vehicles. “This is also an example of regionalisation, where we adapt to local market needs,” he adds.
Equipped with remarkable fast-charging capabilities, the XC70 enables users to cover most daily commutes without any tailpipe emissions, minimising driving costs. For longer journeys, the presence of an efficient combustion engine ensures flexibility and freedom, allowing drivers to venture further without the constant concern of needing a charging station.
The XC70’s blend of versatility, spaciousness, and comfort guarantees it suits every type of journey, whether short or long, urban or rural. It reflects the ethos that Volvo has cultivated throughout its history: a vehicle designed to cater to the modern family’s multifaceted lifestyle.
Embodying modern Scandinavian design
Staying true to its Scandinavian roots, the XC70 showcases elegant and purposeful design features that are both modern and timeless. Its commanding presence is defined by clean, flowing lines from the front to the rear that evoke a sense of calm confidence and rational simplicity. The robust silhouette, enhanced by a sculpted shoulder and sweeping roofline, makes for a striking aesthetic.
The front of the XC70 sports a shield-like closed grille inspired by Volvo’s all-electric models, complemented by an active grille shutter that automatically adjusts to optimise aerodynamics, cab temperature, and cooling needs. This integration not only boosts energy efficiency but also extends the driving range, a critical factor for hybrid drivers.
Further highlighting its contemporary flair is the upgraded Thor’s Hammer design, featuring bolder daytime running lights. The XC70 also includes headlights equipped with Matrix LED technology, which intelligently adapt to various road and traffic scenarios to enhance visibility and safety for both the driver and other road users.
To complete its stunning exterior, the rear of the XC70 boasts vertical C-shaped taillights that are seamlessly integrated into the rear glass, delivering both an eye-catching design as well as functionality.
The name XC70 pays homage to one of Volvo’s most emblematic vehicles. When the original XC70 debuted, it represented a forward-thinking evolution from the traditional V70 estate, embodying a spirit ready for adventure. The new model continues this legacy, offering a mid-sized SUV format that is both larger and more spacious than its predecessor, the XC60.
