There were tears, emotional family moments and kitchen disaster on the latest episode of MasterChef South Africa as fan-favourite contestant Dr Phil Munda became the latest home cook eliminated from the competition.
After two consecutive elimination-free weeks, the pressure returned to the MasterChef kitchen with five contestants forced into black aprons following last week’s demanding team challenge.
The losing teams had been tasked with preparing a two-course meal for some of South Africa’s top radio personalities, placing several contestants at risk of elimination.
But it was the departure of the calm and compassionate Dr Phil that left both contestants and judges visibly emotional.

Emotional family messages set the tone
Before the elimination challenge began, the Top 10 contestants received heartfelt video messages from loved ones back home.
The emotional moment immediately shifted the atmosphere in the kitchen, reminding contestants of the sacrifices and support behind their MasterChef journeys.
For Dr Phil, hearing from his wife Ashleigh appeared especially overwhelming.
The general surgeon, affectionately known by viewers as the season’s “good doctor”, became emotional throughout the challenge and even broke down in tears while speaking to judge Zola Nene.
Contestants faced difficult Biscoff dessert challenge
Inspired by family memories and comfort food, contestants were tasked with creating a dessert using Biscoff biscuits and spreads.
While most contestants approached the brief confidently, Dr Phil decided to honour Ashleigh’s Dutch heritage with an ambitious mille-feuille featuring:
- Biscoff mousseline
- blackberry compote
- homemade pastry elements
Unfortunately, the challenge quickly unravelled after a critical oven mishap.

Oven disaster destroys Dr Phil’s dessert
During the cook, Dr Phil realised his pastry base had barely baked after the oven unexpectedly switched off.
With limited time remaining, the dessert began collapsing under pressure:
- the pastry failed to cool properly
- the mousse lost structure
- the dish melted and lost consistency
Dr Phil later speculated he may have accidentally bumped the oven controls with his knee during the challenge.
The mistake ultimately proved costly in one of the season’s most heartbreaking eliminations.
Judges praise elements of the dish despite flaws
Despite the failed dessert, the judges still found positives within parts of Dr Phil’s cook.
Zola Nene praised the blackberry compote so consistently throughout the competition that she jokingly referred to him as the season’s “Compote King”.
However, she criticised:
- the decision to make biscuits from scratch instead of using the supplied Biscoff biscuits
- overpowering cardamom flavouring
- slightly curdled mousseline texture
Judge Justine Drake delivered a more balanced assessment, complimenting the pastry itself for being crisp and flavourful, while agreeing that the spice profile became too dominant.
Contestants devastated by Dr Phil’s exit
Throughout the competition, Dr Phil built a reputation as one of the kitchen’s kindest contestants.
Fellow home cooks frequently praised his:
- humility
- calm leadership
- generosity
- willingness to help others during difficult cooks
His elimination immediately became one of the season’s most emotional moments, with contestants visibly devastated by his departure.
Simele secures first Dish of the Day
While the episode ended in heartbreak for Dr Phil, there was also a major milestone for contestant Simele.
The home cook earned his first-ever Dish of the Day despite joking earlier in the episode that he only had “one dessert in his arsenal”.
This time, that single dessert proved enough to impress the judges and secure the top spot.
