Mandela Day Langtafel to transform Bree Street

Bree Street will become a public dining table for thousands of people when the Mandela Day Langtafel on Bree takes place in Cape Town on Saturday, 18 July 2026.

Community Chest, Young Urbanists NPC, Studio H and Mission for Inner City Cape Town will host the special Open Streets edition from 12:00 to 17:00.

More than 1,500 people to share one table

The Langtafel will stretch from Wale Street to Strand Street and include a section of Shortmarket Street.

More than 1,500 people will be seated at a single table, while thousands more are expected to take part in the open street experience.

The event aims to bring people from different communities, cultures and backgrounds together in a shared public space.

Guests will be encouraged to connect, share a meal and break bread as one city.

Homeless community invited to join

Inclusion and dignity will form a key part of the Mandela Day event.

More than 500 members of Cape Town’s homeless community have been invited to join the table and receive a complimentary wholesome meal.

“Nelson Mandela had the unique ability to unite people,” says Peter Heeger, CEO of Community Chest. “Our Langtafel celebrates the spirit of what Madiba represents. It’s about creating a sense of dignity, belonging and human connection.”

Guests encouraged to bring a picnic

Visitors can bring their own picnic or buy food from participating Bree Street restaurants.

The focus will be on sharing a meal together, regardless of where the food comes from.

Entry to the event is free and open to everyone.

Open Streets returns to Bree Street

The event also marks the return of Open Streets to Bree Street.

The road will be transformed into a people-first space for walking, cycling, families, local businesses and community activities.

Public transport into the Cape Town CBD, including PRASA rail services, will operate on the day.

Businesses invited to support the event

Businesses and organisations are invited to support the Mandela Day Langtafel in several ways.

They can sponsor meals, provide in-kind support, adopt one of the street blocks, make a financial contribution through Community Chest or donate warm blankets for people in need.
