Showmax has released the first trailer for the second season of Law, Love & Betrayal, confirming the legal drama’s return in March 2026. Season 2 premieres on Sunday, 8 March at 8 pm on Mzansi Magic, with streaming available from Monday, 9 March on Showmax.
The new season raises the stakes after a dramatic Season 1 finale in which Gumede & Associates fell apart. Fresh power players enter the courtroom, led by one of South African television’s most recognisable legal characters.
Sandra Stein makes her return
The biggest addition to Season 2 is the return of Sandra Stein, played by SAFTA winner Shannon Esra. Known as one of Mzansi’s most formidable fictional lawyers, Sandra Stein has appeared across several hit local series, earning her cult-favourite status with viewers.
Esra reprises the role following appearances in The Queen, The River, Gomora, The Throne and The Legacy.
Why viewers believe she is a real lawyer
Esra says many viewers still believe she is an actual attorney.
She explains she is often asked for legal help in public. When she tells people she is an actor, they insist she should study law. The moment only lands when they realise she would disappear from their screens if she did.
How Sandra Stein joined Season 2
Series producer and director Christo Davids approached Esra directly about returning as Sandra Stein.
She says the call felt inevitable. During Season 1, fans repeatedly asked online why Sandra was missing from the show. Her return responds directly to that demand and expands the legal universe of Law, Love & Betrayal.
What makes Sandra Stein so compelling
Esra believes the appeal lies in Sandra’s mystery and precision.
She describes the character as brilliant, efficient and deeply strategic. Every move Sandra makes is intentional. Viewers are drawn to her restraint and confidence, as well as what remains unsaid.
In Season 2, Esra explores a darker edge to Sandra, balanced with humour. The character arrives to unsettle, provoke and expose weaknesses in those around her.
Preparing for the legal intensity
The series scripts are developed with input from consulting law firms to ensure legal credibility. Esra says the challenge is not accuracy alone but making courtroom scenes engaging.
She explains the balance lies in honouring the law while shaping compelling television. Real court proceedings would feel flat on screen, so performance and pacing matter.
An easy character to step into
Unlike emotionally heavy roles she has played before, Esra says Sandra Stein is easy to inhabit.
She describes the character as something she wears comfortably, without emotional residue. For her, Sandra represents confidence and freedom rather than strain.
Will we ever meet Sandra beyond the courtroom?
Esra says viewers are curious about Sandra’s life outside work. She confirms she has already developed a spin-off concept focused on the woman behind the lawyer.
Sandra’s backstory, she says, explains everything about how she operates. The mystery remains deliberate, but the potential is there.
Why Season 2 is essential viewing
Season 2 pushes every character into discomfort. The pressure intensifies. Moral lines blur. Professional choices collide with personal consequences.
Esra says the world of Law, Love & Betrayal deepens, delivering higher stakes and sharper conflict than before.
