Cape Town has secured a major global tourism accolade after being named Best LGBTQ+ City Destination at the 2026 SPARTACUS Travel Awards held in Berlin.
The award was presented during a ceremony alongside ITB Berlin at Orania.Berlin. Cape Town Tourism Chief Marketing Officer Briony Brookes accepted the honour on behalf of the city.
Presented by the publishers of the SPARTACUS Gay Travel Index, the awards recognise destinations that actively promote equality, diversity and inclusive travel experiences.
A city that celebrates diversity
Brookes says the recognition highlights the welcoming spirit that has helped position Cape Town as one of the world’s leading LGBTQ+ travel destinations.
“Cape Town is a city where people feel free to be themselves. From our vibrant queer community and inclusive spaces to our neighbourhoods, beaches and nightlife, this award reflects the openness visitors experience here every day.”
She adds that the city continues to strengthen South Africa’s reputation as a global leader in equality and inclusion.
“South Africa was the first country in Africa to enshrine protections for sexual orientation in its Constitution, and Cape Town proudly continues that legacy. Visitors come for the scenery, but also for the freedom, creativity and connection they find here.”
Recognition for inclusive tourism
James Vos says the award reflects the city’s commitment to creating an inclusive destination for travellers from around the world.
“This is a proud achievement for Cape Town and a reminder of what makes our city special. Diversity, openness and inclusion define our identity.”
He added that the recognition comes at an important time as the city prepares to host WorldPride 2028.
“As we prepare for WorldPride 2028, it is essential that we continue building a destination where LGBTQ+ travellers feel welcomed, celebrated and inspired.”
A growing global reputation
The latest award reinforces Cape Town’s growing status as a leading LGBTQ+ destination. The city offers a thriving queer culture, welcoming neighbourhoods and a busy calendar of inclusive events throughout the year.
Held annually during ITB Berlin, the SPARTACUS Travel Awards remain one of the most influential recognitions in LGBTQ+ tourism worldwide.
For Cape Town Tourism, the accolade strengthens the global appeal of the Mother City as a destination where diversity is celebrated and travellers from all backgrounds feel at home.
