This year’s Joburg Film Festival (JFF) will kick off with the world premiere of the extraordinary documentary Ernest Cole: Lost and Found, a film that promises to be a powerful tribute to one of South Africa’s most significant and pioneering photographers.

Having received critical acclaim following its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where it clinched the Best Documentary award, Ernest Cole: Lost and Found offers a breathtaking exploration of Cole’s life and work. In an era when photography was largely ignored as a medium for social change, Cole’s indelible images captured the stark realities of the apartheid era, giving voice to the often-unseen struggles of ordinary South Africans. As audiences witness the profound story of a man whose work transcended borders, they will surely be captivated and inspired.

Festival curator Nhlanhla Ndaba noted, “This feature explores not only Cole’s incredible body of work but also his tragic and untimely death in exile at the age of 28. With exclusive access to his photos and a profound exploration of his legacy, this documentary serves as a long-awaited homecoming for a man whose dream was always to return to South Africa.” Directed by the renowned Oscar-nominated filmmaker Raoul Peck, known for his impactful works like Lumumba and I Am Not Your Negro, the film’s opening night will be a celebration of storytelling and artistic expression.

As the festival unfolds, Johannesburg will transform into a vibrant cinematic playground. With more than 100 films showcased from across the globe – including 28 African premieres and 12 world debuts – the JFF 2025 promises an unforgettable immersive experience for film lovers and industry professionals alike. This year, the festival is doubling down on its commitment to emerging talent, with a spotlight on student films from respected institutions such as AFDA, TUT, UCT, and WITS.

The golden thread of storytelling
Embracing the theme “The Golden Thread”, this festival celebrates the shared experiences and emotions that unite communities through storytelling. Attendees can expect a diverse lineup of thought-provoking narratives, including:

  • BOS – A gripping post-apocalyptic thriller showcasing South African resilience.
  • THE MAN DIED – A moving autobiographical film based on Wole Soyinka’s powerful prison memoir.
  • HAPPY: THE TRUE STORY OF HAPPY SINDANE – A world premiere exploring identity and belonging through the journey of a mixed-race boy.

Additionally, the festival proudly highlights South African cinema’s rise on the global stage with significant screenings of:

  • OLD RIGHTEOUS BLUES – South Africa’s official Oscars’ submission.
  • THE LAST RANGER – An Oscar-nominated film showcasing the strength of African storytelling.

These screenings represent a transformative moment for local filmmakers, reflecting the burgeoning influence of South African narratives within the international film industry.
