The South Africa national rugby sevens team sealed a remarkable season by defeating the Fiji national rugby sevens team 10–7 in the final of the 2026 HSBC SVNS New York tournament on Sunday.

The victory secured South Africa’s fourth tournament title of the season and confirmed the Blitzboks as the 2026 HSBC SVNS Series champions.

Tight final decided by disciplined defence

The final began with both teams level on series points, placing enormous pressure on the result in New York.

South Africa produced a composed first-half performance. A try in each half gave the Blitzboks a 10–0 lead, putting them in control of the match and the series race.

Fiji fought back late in the second half, narrowing the gap to a single score. However, the Blitzboks’ defensive resilience proved decisive.

With Fiji launching a final attack in the closing 30 seconds, tension filled the stadium. A knock-on halted the Pacific Islanders’ move near the tryline, handing possession back to South Africa.

From the resulting scrum, Fiji conceded a penalty. The Blitzboks calmly kicked the ball into touch to seal the win and the series title.

Key moments shape the final

The first breakthrough came through strong defensive play from Impi Visser, who ripped the ball free in a tackle.

Following a quick passing sequence, Gino Cupido raced over after just two minutes for the opening try of the match.

The contest remained close after halftime. Two minutes into the second half, Tristan Leyds crossed the tryline after Fiji lost possession in a tackle near their own line.

The score moved to 10–0, giving South Africa a strong advantage with five minutes left.

Fiji responded when Terio Veilawa powered over for a try and added the conversion himself, reducing the deficit to 10–7.

Despite the late surge, the Blitzboks held firm and denied Fiji a match-winning score.

Semi-final victory over Argentina

Earlier in the day, South Africa secured their place in the final with a 14–5 semi-final victory over the Argentina national rugby sevens team.

Sebastiaan Jobb opened the scoring in the second minute after South Africa forced a loose Argentine pass. Jobb finished the move confidently, while Leyds added the conversion to make it 7–0.

A spectacular 70-metre run from Selvyn Davids delivered South Africa’s second try and a 14–0 halftime lead.

Argentina responded after the break when Marcos Moneta crossed in the corner to narrow the score to 14–5.

The Blitzboks defended strongly during a frantic closing period that included penalties, turnovers and a disallowed South African try.

Dominant season for the Blitzboks

By the end of the tournament in New York, the Blitzboks had once again shown their dominance in international sevens rugby.

The title added to South Africa’s earlier tournament victories in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver, confirming a standout campaign for the team.

The series win further strengthens the reputation of the Blitzboks as one of the leading teams in the global sevens game.
