Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva has officially begun training with Real Madrid after completing his move to the Spanish giants following the end of his Manchester City contract.

The 31-year-old reported for his first day of pre-season training on Monday, marking the start of a new chapter after nine trophy-filled seasons in the Premier League.

New challenge in Madrid

Silva joined Real Madrid on a free transfer after his Manchester City contract expired earlier this summer.

The experienced midfielder has signed a two-year deal and is expected to add creativity, technical quality and versatility to the squad.

He joins fellow first-team players Vinícius Júnior and Brahim Díaz as preparations continue for the new La Liga campaign.

Mourinho gets his man

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho reportedly identified Silva as one of his priority signings for the summer transfer window.

The club moved quickly to secure his signature, fending off reported interest from both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.

Silva is expected to feature in several positions, including central midfield and on the right wing, where his vision, work rate and ball retention have made him one of Europe’s most consistent performers.

Trophy-filled Manchester City career

Silva leaves Manchester City after an outstanding nine-year spell, during which he established himself as one of the club’s most influential players.

During the 2025/26 season, he remained a key figure under Pep Guardiola, making 38 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals and providing four assists while maintaining an impressive 92% pass completion rate.

In the UEFA Champions League, he featured in eight matches, contributing one goal with a 93% pass completion rate.

World Cup campaign with Portugal

Following the domestic season, Silva represented Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He made four appearances for his country before Portugal’s campaign ended with a 1-0 Round of 16 defeat to eventual champions Spain on 6 July.

Now fully focused on club football again, Silva begins his Real Madrid journey with expectations high as he prepares for his first season in La Liga.
