Telkom Powers Possibility as Presenting Partner of Classics on Turf

57

Classics on Turf, the bold South African event series that fuses the elegance of classical music with the vibrancy of sport, has announced Telkom as its Presenting Partner until 2027. This partnership signals a shared vision between two brands rooted in heritage yet determined to innovate for the future.

Under Telkom’s revitalised brand proposition, Possible begins here, the collaboration will unlock new dimensions of cultural connection, digital sophistication, and inclusive experiences.

A Heritage of Inspiration

The series draws inspiration from the life of founder Zwelibanzi Mntambo, whose first encounters with classical music in Soweto shaped a lifelong passion. He often recalls seeing musicians of the Soweto Symphony Orchestra carrying violins and cellos—an orchestra led by pioneering conductor Michael Masote.

Today, that legacy continues under Masote’s son, Kutlwano Masote, who serves as musical curator. At the December 2023 edition, Kutlwano conducted a performance featuring his own son, Pendo, creating a poignant three-generation tribute to South Africa’s musical heritage.

Just as Classics on Turf builds on legacy, Telkom has been part of South Africa’s story for decades—a trusted name in connectivity since 1991, now reshaping itself as a human-centred, future-facing brand.

Where Heritage Meets Horizon

At its heart, Classics on Turf is about creating shared moments of belonging through music, sport, and storytelling. With Telkom’s support, the event is set to scale new heights, expanding access, deepening audience engagement, and opening fresh creative possibilities both onsite and online.

The 2025–2027 calendar includes:

  • Cape Town edition: 31 October 2025, Steenberg Golf Club and Norval Foundation
  • Johannesburg edition: 14 November 2025, Killarney Country Club
  • Durban edition: dates to be announced for 2026

A Partnership of Purpose

According to Gugu Mthembu, Chief Marketing Officer at Telkom:

“Our partnership with Classics on Turf beautifully embodies what Telkom stands for. It merges heritage and innovation, honouring the timeless power of classical music while reimagining how people experience it in contemporary, inclusive spaces. This collaboration is not just sponsorship; it is a celebration of what becomes possible when creativity, technology, and culture come together.”

Together, Telkom and Classics on Turf are redefining what’s possible for South African audiences seeking meaningful cultural experiences, for brands seeking authentic engagement, and for a nation whose heritage and creativity fuel a shared future.
